Writer's Block: Adult Onset

Feb 20, 2009 13:28

this is a question that's not easy to answer. i simply find myself unable to say, okay, this is the age that i think would be perfect. and this is because everyone is different.
over here in germany, you're considered a legal adult with all the rights and obligations when you turn 18. however, when it comes to justice, people between 18 and 20 are considered young adults, which means that juvenile law could apply if this person obviously isn't very 'grown up in the head'.
i like it that way and i think it's a good idea.

p.s. yes, we're allowed to legally buy and drink alcohol at the age of 18, there's no such thing as 'obviously, you're legal, can drive a car and vote, but you're not allowed to drink because you have to be 21'.

on the one hand, this isn't such a bad idea considering the amount of accidents that happen because of driving under the influence of alcohol. over here, you turn 18 and suddenly you're allowed to drive, to drink, to do everything you want. it's not like you couldn't drink before because it's fairly easy to get alcohol (even with all the laws trying to prevent it), but it's not legal and even though no one would get arrested because of it, it still might be a little much to take in for young adults.

if people were allowed to drive when they're 16, they'd have some time to get used to everything. but personally i find it kind of ridiculous to say that you're capable of driving a car when you're 16, but you have to wait a whole 5 years before you can go out for a simple, innocent drink.

age, writer's block
