I've never been to such a place before. What sorts of things would one recommend a person do here? Any words of caution?

[Private to Rex Lewis]

Before we disembark, I understand that you may wish to wander outside of my company, and you will not do so without sufficient protection. Come to my cabin.

Protection? [Does she mean guns or condoms, HE DOESN'T KNOW.] All right.

Would you like to depart after luncheon or shall we see what they've got to eat over there?

No, let's go now. I don't want to be on this boat any longer.

Meet me at my cabin, and we'll depart shortly.

[Frances has been preparing a talisman since the night before. A cutting from her ancestor's hanging rope will not do the trick this time -- she can't trust it to work when said ancestor had lost all love of men. It might even harm him faster, that being the case. She had to pick something appropriate then. So when he arrives, she answers, awake and alert but unknown to him on only a few hours of sleep.]

Come in. I won't delay us long.

[Rex is exhausted, himself, more emotionally than physically. Save for a few outbursts, he's felt somewhat numb and detached from everything, as though he's floating around but not really here.]

All right. [He shuts the door behind him and stands there, looking around idly.]

This probably isn't the most conventional, and I don't expect you to understand. [She appears to be packed for a little outing, herself, nicely dressed, a tote bag slung over one shoulder. But she holds out an open palm.] Give me your hand, please.

[Rex makes a perplexed face and extends his hand.] What are you giving me?

Protection. [She brings out a ring. A simple band, gold, and it will fit easily on his pinky fingers, at least.] Wear it. Don't take it off until we come back.

[He blinks, bringing his hand back and inspecting the ring.] How is this protection?

This was my wedding ring. Now, before you assume this is something mushy and sentimental, listen: I was up half the night binding this. It's the next best thing to my actually being there, should we decide to explore on our own at some point.

Binding? [Your magical talk is confusing to the science nerd.] I didn't know you were married.

Past tense. My husband died a very long time ago. [She seems oddly matter of fact about this.] And it's magic, Rex. My magic. So long as you trust me it'll work for you. Maybe even if you don't.

Mm. [Rex doesn't push for any details, figuring it's not really his place. He looks at the ring again and experimentally slides it on his pinky finger. He may have skinny fingers, but they're still bigger than a woman's.] But work how? What does it do?
