alternatives to JETsasayakaMay 17 2008, 17:05:20 UTC
Sorry to bother you here, but I saw your posting on the JET page. I wanted to reply here as I sometimes get long winded; actually also gave this info to the other person wondering about alternatives as well.
Two years ago, I applied through the New York City Consulate and was rejected. I moved closer to some family and applied again through a smaller consulate, where I was selected.
A lot of sister cities have exchange programs-although I haven't met a sister city ALT from anywhere but in the US. They all have the same contract as us JETS in my town. They are generally only for a year, but a lot of people have stayed in the past-they just went on to work for eikawa or other companies.
I have had many friends work for GEOS, AEON, and WestGate. I have hear good reviews of AEON, okay reviews of GEOS, and varied reviews of other WestGate and other private companies. WestGate seems to put a cap on how long you can stay in Japan. Check the following:

Don't apologize -- you're not bothering me at all! Thank you for all the information. I'll have to check those sites out. I plan on applying through the San Francisco consulate because it's pretty close to me.
If I can't get into JET, I plan on applying to AEON/Amity because it looks like a pretty good program. One of the things I don't like about GEOS is the business factor of it.
