Took advantage of the Indian cookbooks and small pile of Hindi movies living in my house and had some people over for an Indian feast and movie watching. The food: pretty fantastic. The movie: a romantic comedy/drama, with the usual dance sequences and social tropes (the first song was an argument between all of the men and all of the women about whether the women had Awesome Powers of Beauty and Allure or whether these powers were granted by the men who chose to admire them). I admit, I picked this particular movie (Kuch Naa Kaho) on the simple criteria that it was the only one I had here that's under 3 hours. Much less subtle euphemistic dancing than the other Bollywood offering that I've seen (Devdas):)
For the curious, the menu was:
Brown Basmati Rice
Chana Dal (split yellow chickpeas (I think))
Gobi Aloo (Cauliflower and potatoes -- spices but no sauce per se)
Sour Chickpeas (cooked with tomatoes, all kinds of spices, and lemon juice)
Carrot Salad with Black Mustard Seeds
Onion Chutney
Cilantro Chutney
Yogurt Sauce with Cucumber and Mint
Fruit Salad (mango, oranges, bananas, ground cloves)
Various cookies made by me and others
It was pretty exciting, and I think everyone had a good time.
