I saw The Town today. It's a solidly acted, well-directed heist flick but the ending is kind of ridic- possibly to make up for the "this won't end well" vibe that you have through the whole movie. I really wasn't expecting Ben Affleck to play such a large part in the movie. I was thinking that Jeremy Renner would be more of the lead guy. Like I said, the plot was serviceable and there were some exciting action scenes, but I was a little bit disappointed.
Ben Affleck
I've always thought Ben Affleck got kind of a bum wrap as far as acting was concerned. He's capable and likable, but I think he should let Casey stick to acting and Ben should stay behind the camera a la Gone Baby Gone, which I think was a superior movie with way more astonishing performances.
Jon Hamm
I love this man- but he kind of always plays Jon Hamm. Maybe it was the way the role was written or that his character didn't really have enough screentime, but he came across a bit bland and unbelievable in his hard-nosedness.
Rebecca Hall
Perfectly capable and had a few really moving moments, but I guess I should watch her in Vicky Christina Barcelona to see what all the fuss was about.
Jeremy Renner
RG said that he really liked Renner in this. He said Renner is good at playing a "thug". Again, I think the problem with this movie is that- as the ad says- it's a mix of The Departed and Heat, but the characters are nowhere near as charismatic. The grittiness and cinema verite of Gone Baby Gone are still in this movie, but the characters are kind of flat and there's not as much like, "Oh my God, these people are horrible" as you felt after GBG.
Blake Lively
You know? I want to give her props for having the balls to go after this role. Visually, she came across as trashy and tacky and coked out and that takes guts. There's also a relatively graphic sex scene that she's involved in that takes a fair amount of balls. Her accent and general mumbliness made her a little hard to understand, but particularly in her scene with Jon Hamm later in the movie and her scene with Ben before the climax of the film, she impressed me a little bit. Was there a better choice for this part? Maybe, but I think she was ok.
