[Damiren] Running Elf

I heard about a troll cultural event, and decided to participate, partly out of curiosity and boredome, partly from a genuine desire to represent the Sin'dorei in a gathering of the other races of the Horde and advance the Battleguard's mission of diplomacy. As it turns out, I was not the only elf present; Thierry also ran in the race. Oh, it was a race, from Tarren Mill to the gates of... a troll city that I can't remember the name of, it starts with "Zul" but they all do. I was pleased to see that the four winners of the race were each of different races themselves; orc, troll, goblin, and Forsaken. I was also surprised that there were no tauren (or, as I have learned they call themselves, Shu'halo) in the race.

As a... forfeit? for losing, those of us who did not win had our throats cut (not fatally!), as a symbolic offering in the spirit of the original "race". Or... something, it's a troll cultural thing. After some debate I have decided to keep the scar, though I'm hard put to explain why, even to myself. Thierry, bless her soul, said that it would make me look "dashing" to the ladies. I can't imagine that a scar on my neck looking like someone tried to deliver a coup de grace would be attractive, or that my story of getting it by losing a race would add to the misti mystiq charm. Another thing that surprised me was the refusal and extreme reluctance of several of the orcs who lost to get the cut. Two went so far as to flee the scene rather than be cut; one would only accept the cut in return for biting the troll who delivered it. I would think that there would be less dishonor in accepting the cut and having it healed without a mark, than to be seen to have flinched and run away rather than take a relatively minor wound that had already been recieved by two "weakling" blood elves. As much time as I have spent in Orgrimmar, I believe I still do not understand orcs... that in fact, I have a better understanding of trolls, which is in some ways a deeply disturbing idea.

Back to patrolling today. I do hope that Commander Blacksun returns soon; there are some grumbles of unrest among the Battleguard at his extended absence.

gracious loser, damiren, ambassadorial duties, run belf boy run, ritual scarification, cultural festivities, thierry, trolls are insane but fun, crimson battleguard, orcs are weird too, athane
