Interrupting my Daggerthon for this, recently re-issued in the British Library Crime Classics series. Inspector French tackles the disappearance of first one then two, then three people with the methodical approach of a man tackling a series of crossword puzzles, whilst maintaining an appreciation of the beauty of the countryside around Farnham and Guilldford and an admiration for the engineering feats undertaken in constructing the Hogs Back bypass. The ‘who’ and ‘why’ is fairly guessable, the ‘how’ is more convoluted, but it is pleasure to read about an Inspector who when he isn’t cycling between crime scenes takes the bus or the train to them.
