Well, though I have been talking of my love of Firefly and Serenity it's time to officially pimp.
I will be attending a press screening Tuesday night (YESSSSSSSSSSSSS) and also the North Carolina Big Damn Premiere Party on Friday night. I'm taking my grandma to see the press screening b/c she bought me the Firefly DVD set and she's psyched about going. Woot.
Grace Hill Media (the peeps throwing press screening) also gave me a link to an FTP with some of Universal's promo stuff. Although this has already been all over the internet, I really like the layout of
international Serenity ad.
The official synopsis of the movie reads as follows:
Joss Whedon, the Oscar® - and Emmy - nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
What the synopsis doesn't tell you: You can enjoy the movie if you haven't seen the show. It is written so that non-fans can follow everything perfectly and fans will pick up non plot essential tidbits related to the show. Joss Whedon really out does himself with the wit and sensitivity of the writing for this movie. The characters are diverse, well formed and entirely lovable. I've seen the movie once, watched the series more than I care to remember, and I still cannot choose a favorite character b/c I enjoy them all so much. Even the "bad" guys are so ingenious in their motivations you have to admire them, in both the show and the movie. The plot is also great: concise and actually wraps up the loose ends but leaves space easily for a sequel. Which Universal will produce (along with a third movie) if Serenity does well. The plot is designed to be a trilogy but works well alone.
I will not lie, I am biased. I love this movie. I love this cast. I love Joss Whedon's style. I suggest everyone at least give this movie a chance, fan or sci fi or not. The best sci fi is character and relationship driven, and this is the best of sci fi.
