We did not equate the name of the place we were going to stay as anything significant. In Mexico, gigante (giant) or increible (incredible) this or that are used loosely. How big a place could it be for the price we were paying? Gerry and I caught a cab from the Patzcuaro bus depot. We gave the driver the address, 80 Libertad. He responded, Oh, Casa Grande! I thought they have him fooled. We wound through ridiculously narrow streets. Only small doors broke up continuous walls of white painted adobe. After 10 minutes or so, we took a left and stopped in front of a very large gate. We walked through. On the right was a small house and beyond, a very large house. The fountain and gardens were impressive. It is amazing how they can shape deciduous bushes into images of camels and llamas. We stepped into a very large foyer. Stretching expansively beyond lay 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, dining room, 3 fire places, sitting area, and solarium. There was a large patio past the kitchen door that looked out on 4 acres of gardens and fruit trees. Our friends, Bruno and Elizabeth, popped out of their chosen bedroom and said, your bedroom is at the end of the hall.Jorge, the gardener, was there, to give us the lay of the land, fire starting instructions, and assured us there was hot water for showers 24 hours a day.
Well, the skeptic was knocked out of me.
Casa Grande? You bet'cha.
