A Day in the Osa

Feb 20, 2008 10:16

It is the 4th year in a row Gerry and I have come to this most exotic place. At 5AM or so the shorus of jungle sounds begin, led by the hoarse roar of the howler monkeys. Next the scarlet macaws squak and squabble in route to their favorite pecan tree. The parrots also sound mismatched without the benefit of eharmony.
We walk the dirt road behind our friends' property, our intent is bird watching. We are looking for the elusive, irridescent Turquoise continga. But we are immediately distracted by curious white faced monkeys oggling us from branches 15 feet above our heads. Their cherub expressions do not change as they break branches and throw wood at us. Malicious intent without accuracy.
As we walk along you are taken by the beauty of the jungled hills, as humid misty clouds float and brush the jungle canopy. The bird work began when we reached the river. In a small area we saw egrets, blue , green and tiger herons, kingfishers, northern jacanas, lineated woodpecers, ibis and toucans. Great birding, but no contina.
Now it is 8AM and starting to get hot. Breakfast, beach walk, a hammock, and book are the order of teh day. One just goes with the flor down on the Osa.
