Well, I'm heading out to Vegas today! I haven't started packing yet, but I figure I can cram everything together at the last minute. I'm so glad that I don't have to drive to Melbourne for the next week or so, because that drive is killer. My new rotation is at Holmes Regional and it takes me about 90 minutes each way which SUCKS. Although I can now say I've seen a full-sized roadkill gator in the middle of the road as I was driving on 520. And I've never even met my preceptor yet because he works at Cape Canaveral Hospital. It's kind of a weird situation since I wasn't supposed to have him initially, but my initial preceptor switched jobs so he became her replacement. I mainly work with the clinical pharmacists at my current hospital, and then report back to my preceptor via phone/e-mail for new projects.
Being on the required Drug Information rotation, my job is mainly research into all sorts of questions that people ask. We had a patient come in with really low sodium levels and he was acting dazed and confused as a result, and the doctor was attributing it to one of his home meds (Provigil) so I had to search and find out if there were any case reports of this happening. Nada. In the end I had to call up the company and file an adverse report, fill out a MedWatch form with the FDA, and fill out an adverse drug reaction report with the hospital.
My job also consists of reading lots of journal articles and writing long summaries and opinions to certain questions. I just finished one on the addition of blue dye to enteral feedings to monitor for aspiration, and now I have to write one on Ranexa, a fairly new drug for chronic stable angina, and see if it would be worth adding to the formulary -- I'm leaning toward no, at this point.
Enough boring stuff. Hmm... last night I went to Beluga Restaurant for another one of those free pharmacy dinners (antithrombotic therapy), and the guest speaker was a professor from UF which is another reason we all wanted to go. I love getting to try out all these fancy restaurants that I would otherwise probably never eat at.
All in all, I've had a really great week, and I look forward to everything that Vegas holds!
P.S. I just got a job offer from Parrish Medical Center! I haven't responded yet, but we'll see...
Time to begin packing. I am having breakfast/coffee with a friend and then heading over to my last rotation site to drop by, say hi, discuss residency stuff, have free lunch, and mingle with my buddies. See you when I get back from Vegas!
