Ambulatory Care

My first week at Florida Hospital East is over, and it went very well. Tuesdays and Thursdays are Coumadin clinic, so we counsel patients about their medication and check their INR, and see if it falls in the normal range, or if their dose needs to be adjusted. Wednesdays are Diabetes Clinic days, and we go over our patients' blood sugar and food logs, and see how well they are progressing. Oftentimes their full med list is a complete mess, so we have to sort through those problems on top of their diabetes-related problems. We work with a doctor on these days, so we can make any necessary adjustments to their drug regimen right away.

On Mondays we'll be following doctors on their rounds as they meet with their scheduled outpatients at the clinic. And there is generally a topic lecture with the residents and med students every day that we can attend. These are interesting because they're usually pertinent topics to learn more about, and it helps us to become better acquainted with the residents and doctors that we work with.

This is an 8-week rotation though, so I'll be here for quite a while to come still. At least it's fairly close to where I live, although 408 can be a bear on some days. And another good aspect about this rotation is that the preceptor doesn't expect us to do too much work at home -- she wants us to be able to do nearly everything at the hospital, so I can actually have a life after work for the most part. She's really fun and great to work with, so I'm sure I will enjoy this rotation considerably.
