I recently watched a
video on youtube in response to the claim by religion (i/e conservative Christians) that 'you can't trust science.' It points out all the great things science has done for us, and that religion has not progressed mankind at all.
I am so damn sick of science being in the middle of the war between dumbass fundamentalist Christians and equally stupid fundamentalist Atheists. The issue between these two religions (as I really do consider fundamental atheism to be a form of religion that people from the internet join to look smarter) should be boiled down to one fundamental issue: Whether or not God exists. According to the atheist, no. According to the believer, yes, and said god conforms with various religious texts.
This has absolutely nothing to do with science. Science is inapplicable to religion, as religion by its very nature deals with something that is unquantifiable, and seeks in its most earnst forms to bestow spiritual enlightenment, salvation, and a divine connection to its members. Atheism is a denial of any god, and that's just fine.
But somewhere down the line, some idiots brought science into it, and thus began the internet war between stupid people, whereas in the mean time, there are scientists working in the Vatican, and the Pope has acknowledged evolution. Many scientists are spiritual, if not religious, and in turn many atheists know absolutely nothing about science.
Science is just the study of the world. Religion is a pathway to the divine, and whether or not God exists has absolutely nothing to do with science. If god exists, that's fine. If he doesn't, well, science will continue studying the world.
That video simply pissed me off. I understand it is in response to fundamentalist Christians being fucktards, but I expect more maturity and sensibility from the atheist side, at least the sense to leave science out of the equation, even if religious idiots want to bring it up. I tend to side with atheists, as you can actually talk to them, and I consider myself a mix between an Agnostic and a progressive Christian, with slight Buddhist aspects somewhere in there. I also believe in Science, and while I consider a lot of science to be flawed, I still feel it's the best tool to understand the world we live in. Religion offers tools to understand your own life.
If a Christian decides to believe in metaphorical stories about the garden of Eden over the theory of Evolution, that's their business. I'm disappointed in them for being stupid, but I guess it can't be helped. But as someone who wants to believe in God, I'd rather not have to choose between believing in science and believing in God.
Frankly, I think the two are intertwined. I don't necessarily view God as a watchmaker, but instead as a programmer running a massive simulation, or perhaps even the program itself. God is the equation running the universe, and by understanding the secrets of the universe, we are unveiling the face of the divine. Truth shouldn't be something to be feared, as if God is perfect, he has nothing to hide, and most likely doesn't mind us studying his work. His believers, on the other hand, do. They cling onto old beliefs instead of seeking to understand the mysteries of this universe, God's creation.
God offers a sense of something greater, and hope for the afterlife. This has nothing to do with science. Please stop mixing the two up, they don't go well together.
Germboy, out/Peace.
