One of my friends from Art School contacted me recently, she and I were pretty much in the same boat regarding our feelings toward transferring: She was a Creative Writing major and I was a Film/Photo double-major. She transferred to UCLA, I transferred to Chapman. Over the last couple of years we've kept in touch through the internet and ran into each other at the UCB more than a handful of times.
She contacted me recently and we got to talking about our involvement in the Comedy Scene, I just recently hosted a Free Comedy Show at Chapman featuring my friend's Improv Troupe 'The Knights of Comedy' as well as some local comics, including my roommates. We're also contemplating starting our paths in stand-up and so we got to gabbing about that.
Anyway, she's involved in this recurring Comedy series at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and was acting as bartender last night. The show featured performances by Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, Natasha Leggero, Steven Brody Stevens, Mike Phirmin (of Hard & Phirm - one of the more hilarious comedy music duo's), Tom Lennon (of Reno 911 - the guy in the shorts), as well as Duncan Trussell.
I rolled out to it with my gang: Orson, Niko, and Jon.
The show started with a special performance by Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr, which was pretty awesome. It's always awesome to witness a legend at work.
Brody Stevens was MCing, and if you've never seen him perform before he more or less yells out his set by revealing embarrassing facts about himself. He reminded me a lot of my High School Theatre teacher, David Schwartz in the fact that he was this incredibly tall, hairy jewish guy who a wisecracker.
Patton killed it as always, he went off on a tangent about 'mumblecore' movies and douche rock, primarily targeting Hoobastank and how he thought that all douche rock songs were by this one band, but since he got a new car with a radio that tells you which band is playing what song that he discovered a whole genre of douche rock bands that have been contaminating the airwaves.
Afterward we all hung around, Kate told me to stick it out until the huge crowd left.
I ended up hanging out with Natasha Leggero, whose hilarious and even laughed at my stupid jokes a bunch of times. Then Duncan Trussell and I ended up having this ridiculously deep conversation about the cosmos and how he created a fake youtube video where he was claiming to be a NASA scientist who found life on Mars. He told me that he would either get messages from people thanking him for showing them the light, or other people who would tell him that the information he's spouting online is just a projection of some alien force. PEOPLE ARE WEIRD.
The boys ended up getting schooled by Brody for all of 45 minutes. That's one of the most consistent things about the Comedy scene, the guys (especially the older ones) love bestowing knowledge to the newer generation.
We ended up walking out of there at 1am, contemplating offering Duncan a spliff considering he mentioned smoking weed and having a medical card about 5 times. (That's another thing! I'm planning a big Comedy show at Chapman which will hopefully headline Patton Oswalt and Duncan offered to perform which will probably turn into him coming down to Orange County with Natasha, smoking weed with us and going to Disneyland.)
It was an amazing night, to say the least. :)
