Last week Radio 4's Book of the Week was
Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire; on Friday it mentioned
The Pembury Tavern, which might make
timeplease happy. I wonder if they got any extra customers as a result?
Then, on Saturday, I was strolling around Huntingdon and fretting while the tyre garage tried to put things right after the front track control arm fell off my car. If I'd known there'd be a colossal screw-up I'd have taken a book with me, of course, but instead I had to resort to reading the council noticeboard. It contained minutes of a meeting at which a former work colleague of mine was granted planning permission for an extension to his house.
I knew Cambridge was a small place; the rest of the UK's not feeling much larger right now.
