Summary: Zac and Mia make apple pie, despite Zac’s confusion.
Zac stood at the door of the kitchen, watching his aunt in the kitchen.
His eyes went big as saucers when he saw her put an apple out on the counter. When she left the kitchen, he tiptoed up to the counter and snatched the apple. He was short enough and the counter was wide enough that Mia couldn’t see him without leaning all the way over the countertop.
“What…?” Mia said to herself, shaking he head when she came back into the kitchen and the apple she’d put out was gone. She went back to the refrigerator and got out another one.
Zac reached up to try and grab the second apple.
This time, Mia saw him. She shook her head and put her hands on her hips.
“And what do you think you’re doing, Zac?”
“RINGO!” Zac told her in Japanese. “Watashi wa ringo o shitai! [I want the apple]”
“Did you just cuss at me, little boy...?” She asked, shaking her head again.
“Watashi wa ringo o shitai!” He told her again, before deciding to try English this time. “Wan’ apple!”
“Well, why didn't you just ask, instead of grabbing it...?” Mia asked.
“What if say no?” Zac said, giving Mia his best Gomen'nasai (sorry) face.
“Well, I probably wouldn't say no without a good reason...” Mia said, shrugging. “Like I need those apples for the pie i was going to make....”
“Joo make appatoss [apple sauce]?” Zac asked, clapping his hands.
“I said PIE!” Mia laughed, shaking her head. “Hasn't your mami taught you what pie is...?”
“Cherīpai [cherry pie]?” his eyes turned to saucers again. “wike adda matsuri (festival)?”
“I dunno what you're sayin' bud.” Mia shook her head.
“Chewwy pie!” he said, huffing at her. “Joo make da chewwy pai?”
“Well, i don't have any cherries right now...” she said. “so i was thinking i'd go for apple....”
“APPA TOSS!” Zac cheered, clapping his hands again. He liked apple sauce just as much as he liked cherry pie.
“Well, it's not exactly apple sauce, buddy, but yeah, you're close....” Mia told him, laughing. “You wanna help me?”
“No mad dat no Suimin chūdan? (naptime)” He asked, hopeful.
“I don’t know what that means!” she said, laughing.
“Nabbatimbz!”
“Oh, are you supposed to be having a nap right now...?” Mia asked, shaking her head a little. “Well.... i don't think your mami would be very happy with me if i let you skip it, would she...?”
“Haz been long timb!” Zac declared, “Since afata da wunch! [since after lunch]”
“You already had your nap...?” She raised her eyebrows.
“No sweep long timb like da bruzzer an' mama.” He said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Okay, so do you want to help me?” Mia asked, figuring it was all right if he had already slept.
“Hai! Hai! Bez Ōkina tasuke (big help)!” Zac said, clapping.
“Okay, let's wash your hands first then.” Mia said, going over and hoisting him up over the counter, turning the water on.
