Oh. Wow. SRSLY.
I went outside the house all on my own and to the Ogden to see LP in concert. It was amazeballs.
I managed to get to the right place thanks to many drivings of a friend home from work back in the day who lived not far from there, that was no problem. And I was in plenty of time to get in line early enough to not be somewhere that sucked for my general admission ticket. I needed to find a parking space and that is when the problems began, of course. I wandered off the Dark Road (Colfax) and I forgot that when driving that close to downtown it is a rabbit warren of one way streets so of course I got stuck on the wrong damn one. I wandered around totally lost, ended up driving through some eerie looking deserted industrial area, then trying to backtrack I ended up way too far West of where I wanted to be, then I was within sight of freakin’ Elitches FFS, and then ended up on the highway for a second, got off that nightmare, and FINALLY found a street I actually knew pretty well. Then I was too far South. GAH! 45 freakin’ minutes later I got back where I wanted to be, paid a stupid amount of cash for a parking space (which I TOTALLY shoulda done in the first place) and only had to stand on the cold sidewalk for fifteen minutes so it all worked out just fine anyway. The very kind staff at the Ogden led me in where the special section is for disabilities and set up a folding chair for me, too. (it is a standing only venue) I was seated with a sweet couple who have been to see LP three other times and were excited to share their earlier experiences of seeing her live, so that was nice to make some friends and helped with the whole OMG I Have Anxiety in Crowds issue, and the fact that we were kind of roped off from the crowd was a bonus. We were in the corral next to the sound mixer, so the view was good AND we can see over the crowd really well, sweet! The opening act finally started, a pair of guys who go by the name Yoke Lore. They were alright, not maybe my usual thing but enjoyable enough as an opener and I will be looking them up on YouTube to see if they are there, isn’t everyone there? They played a surprisingly short set and then the wait for the headline act started. Man, that was the longest ten or fifteen minutes ever.
LP was incredible. She has stage presence for miles and in person her voice is even more powerful and amazing than it is on CD or videos, holy shit, I can’t even describe her except to say that recordings do NOT do her justice. A whole room full of people singing along with her and she got everyone involved, everyone was dancing and on some songs it was like a call and response event, it was spectacular and invigorating and gorgeous. I was glad for the chair because I couldn’t stand for the whole concert but I sure tried, and sometimes you just gotta dance along in place, ya know. She did a great encore and I wondered if the balcony has been rated for earthquakes because I thought we might bring it down there were so many people up there stomping, it was super. After the concert was done the husband of my just-for-the-concert-friends commented very enthusiastically “You are a true fan!” And I thought that was sweet of him, they both seemed so happy that I was as impressed with the concert as they were, this being their fourth and only my first. And it was also nice to see that there were a lot more folks than I expected that were my age, I expected to be surrounded by annoying youngsters, but us gray hairs were out in force, boo-yeah.
On my way back to the car I saw a little diner looking place open, turns out they sell pizza and shawarma and falafel so I took myself in there and got me a chicken shawarma and some hummus and falafel to take home and it was damn good, I am going to go there again for sure.
Going home was easy and I wondered why Colfax was a ghost town at barely past ten-thirty at night and realized that it is Tuesday night, duh. So home I went and other than not being able to hear (concerts, go figure) I am in surprisingly good shape pain level wise, and full of yummy noms and even more enamored of my pretend girlfriend than I was. Sigh. Like my pretend boyfriend Stephen Fry, I will never get to meet LP but I do think she is the neatest thing since sliced bread, or even toasted bread.
