That's why I hate Fambly Gatherings, of any stripe. And funerals are among the worst.
But Masonic Funerals -- yeah, I'm with you there. :) My late grandfather was a Grand High Poobah of some sort in the Masons, and he had the full deal. Wore the white apron in his casket (which on him, looked kinda funny... heh....), and two of the local High Poobahs did the ceremony. That was the only part of the whole service that actually touched me. I, too, like that mystical-ritual stuff. Really cool.
Well, the surprise cremation at least explains the quickness of the service date. We'd thought maybe he hadn't been embalmed, remember? Well, he wasn't! geeez.....
As for the dissing stuff... yeah. My dad didn't come to Mom's funeral back in April. He just lives up in Loveland fer pete's sake, and he and Mom had kept on friendly terms all these years, but he gave my brother some sort of "welll.... I'm kinda busy... and I gotta go do something and such...." crap. My brother didn't go into hardly any details, because he didn't want to get all pissed off over it again. I know Dad and Mom split up decades ago and Dad is remarried, but HELLO -- she's the mother of his KIDS, and WE were there!!! And he was married to her for 18 FRIGGIN YEARS.....
Gar. Fambly. You're right that true fambly isn't necessarily just a blood relation or genetic donor.
*HUGS again. :) And at least you have ~real~ family, like you said. :)
