Stopping By
Alex had no idea why he was doing this. Why he was holding a brand new toaster under his arm, but he had seen Lexie stealing things at the hospital and had sort of figured out that she must be bringing them home. He thought he could help her out by bringing by a house warming gift or something. After all he was a resident and did make better money than her and George. But he knew Lexie was at work now, she was on call, he knew that. But yet he was still stopping by.
He looked for a doorbell, but there wasn’t one, so he knocked on the door, hoping George would hear it. Alex sighed as he glanced around. This sure wasn’t the greatest part of town. He wouldn’t want to live here. He heard shuffling around and then the door opened. “Alex?” George questioned.
Alex swallowed, shifting from one foot to another. He realized he had to say something. He suddenly remembered the toaster under his arm and thrust it towards George. “I bought Lexie and you a um house warming gift,’ he said.
George was shocked that Alex was standing there. He had no idea how they even knew where they lived. It sort of scared him a little and there Alex was basically throwing a toaster at him as if it were burning his hands. “Would you like to come in?”
Alex felt as if his feet were glued to the ground in that moment. Yeah, he did want to go inside, but why did he want to go inside? Him and George had nothing in common, yet they had everything in common. “Sure,” he said.
George opened the door a little further, allowing Alex to walk inside. George watched him place the toaster on the counter and shove his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he glanced around the apartment. He felt as if he knew what was going through Alex’s head without him having to say anything. He thought this place was dump. He was going to make fun of George and Alex for having to furnish their apartment from the hospital, but it was all they could afford. George didn’t like stealing from the hospital, but it sure made him like his apartment a lot better.
Alex took everything in around him. He knew that everything had come from the hospital and he supposed he sort of expected it to look exactly like a hospital, but it sort of, in some strange ways, feel like a home. He could see why George and Lexie liked it so much. Of course, Alex wouldn’t live here and as he looked around he thought a better house warming gift might have been a TV. “This place is pretty good,” Alex said sitting down on the sofa.
George felt as if his eyes bugged out of his head when Alex actually sat down. He was surprised that he was staying long enough to sit. He was surprised that he had come by as well. “Do you want something to drink?” George questioned. He was trying to be a good host and he had no idea why Alex was here. Probably because he needed a favor or something. Maybe he wanted to wait on Lexie. It really wasn’t any of George’s business.
“Do you have any beer?” Alex questioned.
George nodded and opened the fridge, pulling out two beers. He pulled the caps off them and walked over to the couch. He handed one beer to Alex and took a sip of the other for himself. He had no idea what to say. It wasn’t often him and Alex had a conversation that wasn’t work related or forced. So this felt weird, but they couldn’t sit here in silence. It wasn’t as if George had a TV where he could just put on a game and not have to deal with the rest of it.
Alex took a long sip from his beer, not sure where they were going to go from here. Maybe he shouldn’t have accepted the invitation to come in. Maybe he should have stayed outside and just handed the toaster off, at least then he wouldn’t have to be sitting in this awkward silence that they were experiencing right now. Alex hated the forced silences, it always made him feel so funny. “So, what’s new?” Alex questioned. That was never a question he would ask George or anyone really, but it was already out there and he couldn’t take it back now.
George twisted his head around a little. He couldn’t believe that was the question that Alex had just asked him. Maybe he should just put a new TV on his credit card and deal with making the payments later, because Alex never asked what was new in anyone’s life, because he didn’t care. It was so odd to see him caring. It actually gave George a chill to think that he was asking such a question.
Alex noticed that George wasn’t answering him so he gripped his beer tightly in his hand, not knowing what else to do and not wanting to shatter the glass either. He wasn’t even thinking as he leaned in towards George and gently pressed his lips to her, kissing him gently, tasting the beer on his lips. They slowly pulled apart and George looked at Alex with questioning eyes. “What was that for?”
“Because I like you.”
“I would hate to see what you would do if you didn’t like me.”
