We were at Yosemite today. The first thing we noticed on the way in was that the Merced river was almost empty. In places it is almost entirely under the rocks in its bed. Last time we were there it was a raging torrent. That happens when it is frozen, but it wasn't frozen, at 8,000 feet the temperature was 50F.
This is Glacier Point, access to this overlook is only possible during the summer. At other times the 14 or so miles of high altitude road are closed by snow. Usually it is closed from as early as September through to May or June. Today it was not only open but clear. People were driving up there in ordinary cars and there were no restrictions.
We ran out of time before we could head up to Tioga Pass, but we got to the gates and we had already passed the signs that said the road was open. It really is clear. The latest the pass has ever closed, since 1933, was January 1st. Right now it is entirely clear. That means that right now there is no water for the summer. None.
