The car has a number of issues.
There's been a long slow oil and water leak, unrelated to each other, I think. One is on the left and the other is on the right. Both may be cheap and simple or difficult and expensive to fix.
We got pulled over on Friday night, after a documentation check which took way longer than it had any right to he said I should finish getting my tags renewed. See I had paid, which he knew before he stopped me, but he was probably expecting I was somehow bad outside of that, but I am clean other than the smog. I told him I'd just fixed it and needed the code to clear and would get it checked on Saturday. I think all he could do is give me a fix-it which isn't worth good money, so we got to drive away. I immediately turned right, out of his sight, then did an illegal U turn in a business district. Lucky there wasn't a traffic cop in sight.
So I got the car smogged and it passed. But the readings are all over average, though 20% under the limits, but that means the catalytic converter is probably not going to make it to the next smog test by which time I will have had to do the timing belt again.
I noticed this morning that the front tires are down to the wear bars. That's another $400 and more. Then there was that few regular clicks from the front right, which means the drive shaft, or more importantly the outer CV joint, is past its sell by date. But then a new axle with both joints is under $100.
Hmm. Things seem so much worse until you actually think about them. There are two catalytic converters which must cost... oh, $250 each. Well that's not so bad and they won't have to be replaced until 2013.
Well I'll still be driving it tomorrow.
