In readiness of the impending final installment of the Harry Potter series, I have just re-read Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I felt that it was the most logical thing to do as I will be able to watch the 1st 5 books on film (oooh, I can hear the fans hissing at me from here!) come July 12th.
I just wanted to put down some points and theories (whether they are old theories, I don't know) that I have either just thought of or think I should know for book 7. All are rather self indulgent, but its my journal, so neeer!
1. Dumbledores death.
Is Dumbledore dead? Yes. Is death the end? No. Dumbledore is, afterall, immortalised as a portrait in the Headmasters office.
Did Dumbledore plan his demise? Possibly. If so, why? He did say "death is the next great adventure" to harry in regard to Flamel in book 2, so perhaps he knew what comes next. Perhaps he wants to pass over for some reason. I mean, it was very neat how it all happened, wasn't it. He lead Harry to a cave that he knew about, he had probably been all the way to the horcrux and seen the liquid he would have to drink to obtain it, and that by doing so would probably kill him. And, in this state, also with his withered hand it was clear that he was not 100% as a LIVING wizard anymore.... he possibly felt he provided merely what the ministry craved... "morale to the masses".
If he did plan his death, then Snape is good because Dumbledore will have been privy to his unbreakable vow with Narcissa over Malfoy.
He would be able to satisfy the many asks of obtaining a horcrux (albeit fake), teach Harry important lessons, allow Snape to honour the unbreakable vow, cross over to the land of the dead and keep up the pretense to Voldemort that NOONE other than himself knew he was creating horcruxes.
2. What happens next?
Harry goes back to the Dursleys,
Harry goes the Burrows ref the Wedding of Fleur/Bill.
Harry visits Godrics Hollow and, I think, finds a Horcrux... afterall, Voldy was making one by killing Harry. Although I don't think Harry IS a horcrux, I am sure the last of Voldy's horcruxes was created there, be it with James's ,Lily's or Harry's life as the tool. Perhaps the slytherin cup is here. Voldy would keep his family heirloom as the last and most powerful horcrux. it would contain slytherin-ness that is passed to Harry (waffling here!!) and would probably still be there because noone would know its importance and is probably under the pile of rubble that is the Potter home.
3. The Dursleys.
They know about 12 Grimmauld Place following the chat they, Dumbledore and Harry had at the beginning of book 6.
Does this compromise its security?
4. Snape
Good or bad? Well, bitter and twisted. Angsty and just plain annoyed at most things but, nontheless on the right side of the line in my opinion. Had he been bad he would have made a spectical out of Dumbledores murder. Had he been bad he would have allowed more of the Order to get injured/ killed by not cofunding flitwick, setting up the barrier to the tower and sending up a premature Dark Mark.
5. Voldemort as a teacher
Why did Voldy want to be a Hogwarts teacher? I am convinced that Voldemort is not that fussed about Harry, but rather he saw Dumbledore as his great nemesis. He will see his death as the turning point. Once he knows of this he will come out and try and obtain total domination of wizards (and Muggles?).
6. The Department of Mysteries
Why is it there? Why so secret?
7. Is Harry Dead?
Who witnessed Harry being hit by an avada kedavra curse? Anyway we will assume Harry has been hit by an Avada Kedavra curse which means he is dead... but hark, I hear you say, he is "the boy who lived", etc etc.... Well yeah, I completely agree. But you have to admit that the whole idea of life and death in the Harry Potter world is a bit ski wiff if you ask me... what with Dementors, ghosts, Arches with veils, portraits, horcruxes, inferi, elixirs of life, philosophers stones, spirits coming out of wands, etc, etc, etc. I would say that it would therefore not be pushing the boundary much further to suggest that Harry is, infact, a living dead person! Which leads me to my theory....
8. The land of the dead
I believe that the 'land of the dead' will be important in book 7. I mean, everything is so focused on death. I theorise that Harry is able to pass freely between the lands of the living and the dead, i.e. he can walk through the arch/veil back and forth. I believe that Dumbledore is unable to do this and so picked his time of death tactically with Snape as his tool. He will still be present in the living world thanks to his portrait, but will also be able to help Harry on whatever mission is required in the land of the dead... I imagine obtaining a Horcrux(es). Also, he will be able to spend time with Sirius (I only hoe these scenes are not like Davey Jones' Locker a-la POTC).
Anyway, I'm done rabbetting on, I am now so excited for the OOTP film and ten times more excited for the 7th book. Can't believe its only a month(ish) to go!
