Railroad Spine reviewed in Analog Magazine!

Guess who has two thumbs, speaks limited French, and just got his first big-boy book review? THIS MOI.

In this month's issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact (the May issue), Don Sakers reviewed my novel Railroad Spine. I figured (hoped against hope) that it would be a good review, but even if it was mediocre it was my name and a novel title in a big-ass well-known magazine. Even if it wasn't necessarily over-the-moon, people might still go check it out anyway. Either way, it got eyes on my Amazon pages. So I kind of forgot about it until this month, which is when I was told to expect the review to run. So I read it, and... well, "wow" doesn't really cover it. Because this review is so awesome I'm shocked he's talking about something I wrote.

The genre is "Adventure SF, Psychological/Sociological SF, Steampunk." That's heavy. I had no idea I was writing all of that, but I can see how it fits. I really love the description of Dice as "a lusty lover of both men and women," but my favorite part of the review is the summary of it all:

"While this story wears the trappings of steampunk, it’s no mere adventure tale. Like Impulse, there’s a lot more going on under the surface: questions of freedom and rebellion and a fundamental belief in the power of knowledge. The story is well told and the characters are compelling. Join Dice Bodger on her journey of discovery; you won’t regret it."

To sum up my feelings, I turn to Hans Landa of the SS:

I can't send enough thanks to dbalthasar, who not only made this review happen but she made the book happen. I have zero doubt this book would never have been written if she hadn't tapped me on the shoulder and said, "BUT THEN WHAT HAPPENS?" And shouldn't all stories have that sort of origin?
