It's Columbus Day!
In fourth grade, Mrs Callison's class was set to do a play in honor of Columbus Day. No one tried out for specific parts, we just all stood up and the teacher cast us in various roles based on how well we could memorize/speak/read the lines and so on. To my surprise, I was cast as the lead and played Chris Columbus. I still remember the puffy shirt I had to wear IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL (this was either before Seinfeld's puffy shirt, or before I was allowed to watch Seinfeld to make the "I don't wanna be a pirate!" reference). And I still remember one of my lines: "The Earth isn't flat like a pancake! It's round, like a pizza!" (Even then I was confused because both those things are flat and round, stupid! Yay fourth-grade school plays!). I also remember that I got pulled out of Music class and forced back into my costume so a guy from the newspaper could take a picture. So not only in front of the whole school, but IN THE NEWSPAPER. For years, my nickname was Chris Columbus. ~sniffle~ Kids can be so cruel. If not exactly clever. Somehow that wasn't traumatizing enough, so I decided I wanted to become an actor.
Which led me to high school Drama class. I wrote my first collaborative story with a friend to explain where I was on the day we had a school-wide performance of... Our Town, I think. And it was in Drama class that I met The Girl. The Girl is the one who laughed at something I wrote and called me smart for thinking of it. That's when I realized I had a secret weapon to get girls: I could make them like my BRAIN. So that was when I decided I wanted to be a writer.
So, much like Christopher Columbus, I didn't get to the place I was aiming at, but I think I ended up where I needed to be.
So enjoy your... um. Hm. Columbus Day Sale at Macy's? Lack of mail service? However you celebrate Columbus Day, enjoy it!
