Summary: The trio return home after an excursion and Sarah asks a leading question.
John was quiet on the way back, always facing out the window whenever Sarah glanced in the rearview. Cameron was in the passenger seat staring straight ahead. It was still creepy.
When they pulled into the driveway of the house, John was out of the car before Sarah could even shut off the engine. "I have homework to do," he muttered over his shoulder. Sarah watched him go, sighed and shut off the car. She turned to the right and saw Cameron staring at her. "What?" she said.
"John is upset."
"Seems that way," Sarah said.
She got out of the car and walked to the door John had left open on his way through. She tossed the keys onto the kitchen island and rubbed her forehead, pushing her hair out of her face. Her anxiety at staying in one place was tempered, slightly, by the comfort of having someplace familiar waiting for her. She leaned against the kitchen counter and watched Cameron walk to the opposite side of the island. She mimicked a posture Sarah had taken a few days ago at breakfast; yet another attempt to 'blend.' Sarah smirked and looked down at the floor.
"What the hell are we doing all of this for?"
Cameron tilted her head. "Do you require a reminder of--"
"No," Sarah interrupted with a sweep of her hand. "No, no. Four years to Judgment Day. Trust me, I remember. But I meant what are we doing? Me and John, specifically. He can't even be a normal kid. When he sneaks out, he doesn't go to the movies or sneak a cigarette. We're spending all this time fighting to save a world that he and I aren't getting a chance to enjoy. Every minute of every day is devoted to saving the future."
"A soldier doesn't fight for himself. A soldier fights for everyone else."
Sarah gave a tired smile. "Just because it makes sense doesn't make it right. I just want one day to... smell the roses. To relax and enjoy life. You know?" She looked at Cameron and shook her head. "No. You don't know. Because one rose smells like any other."
"That's not true," Cameron said. "There are environmental issues to take into account, soil--"
"Don't. Just... don't, Cameron." She walked to the kitchen table and dropped into the seat. She sighed and cupped her hand on the back of her neck, massaging the tense muscles. She was aware of Cameron wandering off, but didn't bother to watch her. Let her wander all over creation. At least then Sarah would be spared that level, god-awful stare. She closed her eyes for just a moment, and then became aware of a presence at her shoulder.
She looked up and saw Cameron standing right next to her. She jerked back and hissed, "Jesus. For a robot, you sure move quietly."
Cameron lifted her right hand. She held a white flower with crumpled petals. "Smell."
Sarah looked at the flower and said, "God, Cameron, you just... you don't..." She took the flower and twisted the stem between her fingers. "I meant joy. Happiness, passion, the little things like holding someone's hand. But you can't understand the appeal of any of that, can you?"
"No," Cameron said. She didn't seem ashamed or offended by her shortcomings, just confused as to why they were shortcomings. She knelt on the floor and leaned forward. Sarah barely managed to open her mouth to ask what she was doing when Cameron covered it with her own. Her tongue slid between Sarah's lips, over her teeth, and then pulled back. She sucked as if at a milkshake, and then pulled back. "Was that passion or joy?"
"No," Sarah said. She wiped her mouth. "That was a bad kiss."
Cameron looked confused. Sarah scooted forward on her chair, looked at Cameron and sighed heavily. "Good God." She rolled her eyes, looked toward the back of the house to make sure John's door was closed and turned to face Cameron fully. She put her fingers on the underside of Cameron's chin and tilted her head up. She wet her lips, leaned in, and lightly pressed her mouth against Cameron's.
Cameron kept her eyes open and parted her mouth when Sarah probed forward with her tongue. Sarah tilted her head to the side, deepened the kiss and tried not to overanalyze the inside of the android's mouth. 'A kiss is just a kiss,' the song said. Well, the song didn't know anything about this. The very act of kissing someone was doing something to her. Something very close to irreversible.
After a long moment, the tip of her tongue lightly touching the tip of Cameron's, Sarah withdrew. She ran her thumb along her bottom lip and opened her eyes. She hoped that Cameron would ignore the fact that--
"You're aroused."
Damn. Sarah waved it off and said, "No, I'm..."
Cameron's hand came up and pressed against the crotch of Sarah's jeans. Sarah jerked and gasped, eyes wide as Cameron slipped her fingers over the seam that ran between her thighs. Cameron looked down, then looked into Sarah's eyes as she ran her thumb in a slow circle. "Is this right?"
Sarah sagged against the back of the chair, unable to deny what Cameron was doing to her body. She swallowed hard and gripped the edge of the table. "I-it'll do," she managed. "Just... just keep..." She reached down and angled Cameron's hand a little to the left. She gasped and lifted her hips, pressing down against the deceptively strong fingers. Sarah put her free hand on the back of Cameron's head and pulled her in for another kiss. This time, Cameron put what she had learned last time to good use. It was almost like kissing a human being. Almost. With practice... Sarah shivered at the thought.
She released Cameron's head and reached down to fumble with the catch of her jeans. She yanked the zipper down and forced Cameron's hand into her pants. Two of Cameron's fingers slid easily into Sarah, and she gasped at the touch. "God," she said against Cameron's mouth. She tightened her thighs, jerked her hips forward and came. She exhaled sharply, opened her eyes, and found Cameron staring impassively at her.
"Was that smelling roses?"
"Close enough," Sarah said.
Cameron nodded, as if filing the information away. Sarah forced Cameron to look into her eyes. "And if you ever do anything like that to John..."
"I wouldn't," Cameron said. "Sex is monogamous. Between two people."
Sarah blinked and started getting her clothes together. "R-right."
"If I have sexual relations with you, it would be inappropriate to also have them with John."
"Yeah. Good."
Cameron looked at Sarah's face and said, "For us." Sarah looked up, without comprehending. Cameron elaborated, "We do this, we fight, for John. For each other. Is that a good answer?"
Sarah smiled sadly and cupped the side of Cameron's head. For a moment, after what they had just done and what Cameron had just said, she could almost forget it was a robot. She gestured for Cameron to move and stood up. She straightened her pants and gestured toward the hallway. "I'm... going to go take a bath."
"Okay," Cameron said. She sat on her knees in front of the chair, watching Sarah until she got halfway down the hall. She suddenly said, "May I watch?"
Sarah turned, a refusal on the tip of her tongue. But she hesitated and then crooked two fingers toward herself. "Yeah, why not. Come on."
Cameron pushed herself off the floor and followed Sarah into the bathroom.
