It IS necessary, though, to have seen "Requiem" (the episode with Gibbs' daughter's friend) to understand part of this story. There is a visual aid included in this story; you will see a word that is actually a hyperlink to Photobucket. Click it to see a picture of what Abby is talking about. :D
Summary: Annoyance turns to worry turns to frustrations turns to... something quite different.

Ziva had stayed late to finish sending out paperwork on their latest "guest" downstairs, so she was the last to leave. She gathered her things and pulled out her cell phone as she walked to the elevator. She listened to it ring, then rolled her eyes as it went to voice mail. She hung up - she hated leaving messages on those things - and decided to give it another try when she got downstairs.

She dialed again as she walked through the lobby, again as she walked to her car. Still no answer, and direct to voice mail. "Abby," she growled as she got behind the wheel. She was probably on the phone to someone else. Perhaps Gibbs or McGee. Ziva pulled out of her spot and held the phone with one hand, speed-dialing again as she pulled up to the security gate.

"Hi! You got Abby! I didn't reach the phone in time, but hold on...!"

Ziva hung up and clenched the phone in her fist.

She had made it halfway home when she began to worry. Things happened to NCIS agents. She thought they were a safe little nothing organization, peons to the FBI and CIA. But Kate had been shot in the head, Abby had nearly been murdered, McGee and Tony had both been framed for murder, Gibbs had nearly drowned just two days ago... it was a dangerous agency. Maybe one of the most dangerous, because it was so unexpected.

She flipped a u-turn in the middle of the street and broke the speed limit. She pulled out her phone as she whipped around a sedan. She dialed Abby's number. "Hi! You got Abby! I didn't--"

Ziva disconnected and resisted the urge to throw the phone out the window. She turned onto Abby's street with a screech of the tires, her heart thudding against her ribs as she jumped out of the car. She left the car idling in the street and ran up the sidewalk, through the front door of the building. She pounded up the stairs and withdrew her gun as she pounded on Abby's apartment door.

"Abby! Abby, open the door right..."

The door opened and Abby stood before her, unharmed and wide-eyed at the display. She wore her long black pajama pants, the ones that pooled around her Evil Bunny slippers from Spamalot. Her hair was down, and her tank top revealed a few more tattoos that were usually hidden from view. She had a toothbrush in one hand, cell phone in the other. "Ziva!"

Ziva stormed into the apartment. "Are you hurt? Injured? Is someone here?" She swept the living room with her gun and found nothing out of the ordinary.

"No, no, and no, just me..." Abby closed the door and joined Ziva in the living room.

Ziva turned and cupped Abby's face. She pulled Abby in and kissed her hard and long, tasting the minty toothpaste on her tongue as Abby sagged against her. When the kiss broke and her nerves had stopped singing, Ziva pressed her cheek against Abby's and closed her eyes.

The embrace lasted only a moment, however, before Ziva stepped back and snapped. "Where the hell were you?! I have been calling for twenty minutes!"

"Oh," Abby said. She looked guiltily at her cell phone. "Yeah... um, about that..."

"What about it?"

Abby shrugged and held her hands out. "Well. You know the cell phone pictures I took the other day? The ones that I wanted to use for caller ID on my phone? Well..." She flipped the phone open and dialed through to Ziva. She turned it around to show her the screen. "Every time you call, this is what comes up."

Ziva frowned at the picture of herself. She was at her desk, her head cocked slightly to her right as she stared out of the little frame. She wasn't smiling, wasn't frowning, just... staring. It was an awful picture, in her opinion, but Abby had deemed it "pretty" and hadn't tried for another shot. "Yes?" Ziva said. "So?"

"Well... whenever the phone rings and that picture comes up. It's just so pretty. And I end up looking at it too long. I just... you know, stare at it until the call goes to voice mail. And then I think, 'well, she'll call back and I'll answer this time,' but then I just get distracted again and..." She shrugged and dropped her hands. She ducked her chin and her bangs covered her eyes. "Sorry I worried you."

Ziva smiled and took the phone from Abby's hand. She closed it and dropped it onto the couch as she drew Abby into a hug. "I am sorry, Abby." She ran her hand from Abby's elbow to her wrist and stepped back. "Maybe we could try to get you a different picture."

"Really?" Abby said.

Ziva took Abby's hand and led her toward the bedroom. "Yes. Come on."

Abby stretched and Ziva watched her tattoos twist and bend along her skin. It was quite distracting. Speaking of which... She picked up Abby's cell phone and scrolled through the pictures they had taken. "You know, I do not believe any of these will be any less distracting than the original. Not to mention the fact they are hardly... what is the word, work-safe?"

Abby took the phone and said, "Too bad. I guess we'll just have to take some more." She reached onto the night stand and opened Ziva's phone. "The ones of me didn't turn out too bad."

"But again..."

"Work-safe," Abby nodded. "Well, I guess it's back to square one."

Ziva grinned and pulled Abby to her. She had the feeling that they were going to start having a whole lot of missed calls between them.

Wow, 66 weeks since my last entry... sorry about that. But I haven't been doing much in the NCIS fandom lately. I will post some icons soon just to justify having people still on the flist. :D
