Little Damn TableKate shifted in her seat, glaring covetously at the two pillows nestled under Tony's head. He sighed happily, cracking an eyelid and glancing at her. "Problem, Kate?"
"No," she said, forcing a smile. "Maybe the next time your girlfriend walks by, you could ask her for another pillow."
"I don't really know where I'd put it; I already have three," Tony said.
"I meant for me," Kate snapped.
"Ohh," Tony said. "You could try asking her yourself. Delores is a great lady."
Kate pushed away from her seat and pounded the rock-hard cushion that served for business-class these days. They'd flown to Iowa to track down an AWOL Petty Officer who had faked his death to avoid punishment. The criminal mastermind had been caught when he used his own ATM card to withdraw $20. Gibbs had taken him on an earlier flight, forced to fly commercial because the Navy didn't feel it was worthwhile to spend all that money to apprehend a criminal dumb enough to use his real ID two days after faking his death.
Delores, the cute little redhead with the skirt about a size too tight, wandered past and Tony said, "Excuse me, Delores."
"Yes, Tony?" she said, bending down much farther than necessary.
"Could I get another pillow? My friend here is a little uncomfortable..."
"Oh," Delores said, looking at Kate as if seeing her for the first time. "I'll see if I can scrounge one up for you." She smiled at Tony and said, "See you when we land?"
Tony laughed. "You know it, Delores!"
Kate rolled her eyes. "I cannot believe you."
"What? Just being friendly."
"When are you going to grow up?"
"What are you talking about?"
"This! These women!" Kate sighed and rubbed her forehead. "I mean, there's a time and a place for antics like this--"
"Antics?!"
"--and you're leaving that window. You're a grown man, Tony. You're not a frat boy. Maybe it's time you start acting like one and try... I don't know, a committed relationship for a change."
"I've been in plenty of committed relationships!"
"Name one."
He sighed and said, "Alicia Smith. Gorgeous... long blonde hair, gorgeous blue eyes..."
"Did you sleep with her on your first date?"
"We never slept together. We just held hands, enjoyed each other's company."
Kate waited for the catch and said, "Really?"
"Yeah... didn't last though. She started going with this other guy, so... I stole his milk and poured it into Alicia's backpack at lunchtime."
Kate socked him in the arm. "Tony!"
"That's exactly what she did."
"Name one that you've had since you turned thirty."
He pondered and then shrugged. "I don't know, Kate, I just haven't met anyone... worthy. You know?"
"Well, what if you have someone worthy right under your nose and..." She growled and looked out the window. "When the hell are we going to land?"
Tony raised an eyebrow. "We're not talking about me, are we...?"
Kate sighed.
"What's a-matter, Katie-bear? Some boy not calling you back after the bestest date ever?"
Kate yanked one of the pillows out from under Tony's head and smashed it against the window. She put her head down and squeezed her eyes shut, deciding to ignore Tony for the rest of the flight home.
---
She walked into her apartment and dropped her bag on the dining room table. She kicked off her shoes and headed for her living room, jumping and barely stifling a scream when she saw the person on her couch. "Abby, are you trying to give me a heart attack?"
"Sorry."
"How long have you been here?"
"Since I got off work."
Kate sat in her easy chair and put her feet up. "So?"
"I thought about what you said."
"And?"
Abby bit her bottom lip. "I told McGee I couldn't see him anymore."
"You're sure?"
Abby stood and walked over, straddling Kate's legs and sitting down. "Yeah," she said, leaning forward and nuzzling Kate's cheek. "I'm ready to grow up."
