hey folks, new geology student here with a few questions:
1) how large is the intersection between geology and sustainable development?
2) I've heard the major areas for geologists are working in environmental and engineering consulting firms, for oil/gas companies, in conservation, and in academia. any others? how do job oppurtunities look in each of these areas? from what I've read they're good overall, but if I was more interested in the academic/conservation side of things, would I have a harder time than if I wanted to go work for Mephistopholes Exxon? is interdisciplinary work with anthropology common? paleoclimatology? what's the safest subdiscipline if you want a job? the most competitive?
3) are grad-programs competitive? will I need to be doing serious research in undergrad to get accepted anywhere good for post-bac? anybody care to ramble about their thesis?
4) is this a field where prefering hiking boots and a tent to a suit and an office is as much as an asset as I'm hoping?
5) what's the general culture in geology? (would it be almighty weird of me to want
a house like this, for example, or are there other quirky tree-huggers lurking in this discipline?)
thanks =)
