Why EVERYBODY should see Ponyo
I LOVE this movie. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
And I love more or less Miyazaki's work. Hell, I love most of Studio Ghibli's work!! I'm wearing my Totoro shirt right now!!
So when I realized who Disney got to dub the voices of Ponyo and Sōsuke, the film's main characters, I was a little....well, worried.
I mean, really. Frankie Jonas and Noah Cyrus? REALLY, DISNEY?
I had no idea if either of these kids could act, let alone replace the sweet voices that were in the original Japanese film. (I saw it subbed about 3 times, so sue me.)
It seemed like the Disney Company was just cashing in on their older siblings popularity, and I was right in that respect. Disney tends to dick around with people like that a lot why do I want to work for them again?
But PIXAR, the brilliant and amazing company that has given us films like Wall-E and A Bugs Life, to name a few, oversaw the dubbing. And...they made the right choice!! Little Jonas and Little Cyrus weren't bad.
They may have been....GASP....GOOD?
Yeah, they did great! I don't know why I was worried!
Now, I can say that I wasn't too happy with the english song at the end...but that's the end. You don't have to watch through the credits, and it's not a bad song, but I just didn't like it.
Everybody should see this movie. It's sweet, it's funny, it's moving, it's beautiful to look at, and it may have made me teary eyed a bit.
This is a film that deserves an Oscar of some kind.
So go help it succeed! Let this sort of good film become more mainstream!
