FUCKING SPOILERS BITCHES!
Now that that's out of the way.
In two words: Fuck-ing epic. Two whole episodes devoted to mostly Sokka and Zuko? And they're stuck in a prison? I was so waiting the entire time for one of them to drop the soap.
But I digress.
I never imagined these two working well together. Not to mean that they would dislike each other but I never thought that they would actually bond and have a relationship dynamic that actually works. But hey it's there.
Their conversation as they're flying to the Island? Classic. I actually LOLed at Sokka's, "My first girlfriend turned into the moon," and Zuko's reply of, "That's hard, buddy." Also Zuko's attempts at pep talks? Hil-a-rious.
Zuko: You're going to fail and fail and then probably fail some more.
Sokka: This isn't helping me right now!
Then the scene where Sokka is pretending to beat up Zuko in his cell? I swear Zuko is grinning the entire time. He actually looks pretty damn amused at the whole thing.
And then the confrontation with Mai! Honestly I wasn't much of a Mai fan when she first appeared. She was too boring, too stoic for me to like. But lately I've come to adore her. I thought she was hilarious in the island episode and I love her exasperation when it came to dealing with Zuko's temper tantrums. She really genuinely cares about him, to the point where she's willing to risk her own life for his despite the fact he left her and despite the fact they haven't yet reached any real sort of closure involving their relationship. That, to me, makes her one of the strongest female characters. She's bitter but not heartless and not vindictive. And her expression when Ty Lee attacked Azula? I swear that's the most emotion I've seen on her face and it made me love her.
For Zuko it's harder for me to tell how deep his feelings for Mai are. Its obvious he likes her but he's got so much other emotional baggage I think he's incapable of focusing on Mai at this point in time. He's got too much other shit to fix before dealing with her. I would like to see him defend her at some point though. I understand that one of the awesome things about this show is that the female characters don't need the men to defend them but I still would like to see some chivalry on Zuko's part towards Mai. Protect your woman!
And Suki. I was disappointed in her at the first half but in the second half she fully redeemed herself. Her capture of the Warden restored my faith in her. Her fight with Ty Lee was less dramatic than I would have hoped and its disappointing that there probably won't be a rematch now that Ty Lee has turned against Azula. I really would have loved to see a girl fight between them over Sokka.
The riot was awesome. The way they avoided the usual cliche method of getting in a fight to start a riot was great writing. And the new guy simply starting a riot by yelling, "Hey, riot!" cracked me up. I love that new guy. Hopefully they keep him around and actually have him contribute to the plot somehow. Having another Firebender (especially one as strong as he) would be useful and I'm curious to see how a relatively common folk of the Fire Nation thinks of the Avatar. Please don't turn him into another Haru where he just gets shoved into the background and doesn't add anything to the story after his own debut.
Last but not least, the Azula vs. Zuko + Sokka fight. Oh. My. God. This was the best scene in the entire episode. The fact that Sokka and Zuko are fighting together, relying on each other, and winning made me want to pee my pants. Everytime I saw Sokka step up and make a quick strike then duck behind Zuko so Zuko could fend off her lightning attacks I squeed like a 12 year old. Sokka and Zuko. Sokka and Zuko. Sokka and fucking Zuko protecting him! Jesus H. Christ I love Sokka. I love Zuko. I love the sheer awesomeness of Sokka and Zuko together. Goddamn have my babies.
I could write numerous paragraphs on the awesomeness that is Sokka and Zuko separately, but I think everyone knows all that already so I'll shut up now.
We gave away two of the kittens yesterday to my roommate's friends. Now the mama cat has been wandering around all day crying for them. Breaks my heart =( Be strong kitty!
