Been watching lots of movies lately.

Reviews!

Here be spoilers.

I was actually kind of disappointed in this movie. It had such a great premise and a neat storyline but I felt it was bland, cliche, and almost unimaginative. It's rather forgettable. I did not really care for Ralph, the little girl was okay. The most interesting and intriguing characters I found were the chick from the bug game and the guy from Ralph's game (I can't remember names...I'm terrible and it's been a while since I watched it and I'm too lazy to look them up or remember them it seems). I enjoyed watching their parts a lot more than Ralph and the little girl. The only time I really found myself rooting for Ralph's character is when he was plunging to his death, sacrificing himself so the little girl wouldn't die to the bugs.

Pros:
- Badass soldier lady and the little dude's romance. It kind of screwed with my head cause I know the voice actress for the chick and all I kept thinking was, "She's a lesbian." Regardless I found their romance adorkable and the little dude was so damn cute. I almost wish the entire movie had been about these two.
- I did enjoy that the little girl's glitch actually enabled her to win and that she kept it afterwards. I honestly expected that she rid herself of the glitch and everyone would live happy after ever perfectly. I like the fact that she was still awesome despite being 'not perfect'.
- The whole premise and the explanations for what happens to game and characters in games. I found this idea so fascinating. I'm really disappointed that the story moved strictly into the Candy game. There was so much potential that got squandered.

Cons:
- I found Ralph unlikable. There I said it.
- Lack of character development? I dunno, I found it lacking.
- Turned into a cliche storyline that has been done in so many 3D movies lately. (Villain wants to be/turns good; ie Despicable Me, Megamind)

Okay so the Hobbit wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Not to say I didn't enjoy it but I was rather surprised at how much I was like "Is something interesting going to happen now?" or "Lolz wtf is this shit". My roommate bought the book for me for Christmas so it was interesting to see how the movie was similar and different compared to the source material (I haven't finished the book, I've actually read up to the exact part where the movie ended at.) I LOVED the fact that they got the same actors that played the kingpin characters from the Lord of the Rings series back for this movie. I was freaking out when Elrond was walking up and I was terrified it was going to be a different actor because IN MY HEAD THIS IS ELROND MR. BAGGINS

But I digress. I also loved how they tied in the Lord of the Rings into the Hobbit. I'm really confused by it but I like the fact that they're not just leaving the Big Burning Eye In the Sky out of it and being like "Ohai there was no forewarning of this at all" (even though there wasn't, I think).

I was pleasantly surprised to find the white orc is in the book when re-reading over parts, so I like the fact that the bad guy wasn't some random dude they pulled out of a hat, but in the book the orc is only briefly mentioned (so far) and as far as I know is dead in the current timeline.

The characters.

Okay I love Fili and Kili. Sue me. They're hot. Yes, I'm shallow.

Thorim. I would have liked him more if he wasn't -_- the entire movie. I mean jeez. Guy's a total sour puss. I just found him unlikable (like Ralph!) because he spends pretty much the entire movie bemoaning his lost home, his dad, his granddad, hating on elves, and bitching about Bilbo. Okay I understand he has reasons BUT JESUS CHRIST DUDE. Elrond could give him his kingdom, Bilbo could steal all the gold back for him, Gandalf could bring his dad/granddad back from the dead, and Galadriel could give him the best handjob any man on Middle Earth has ever experienced and this guy would still find something to complain about. I hope they tone down his moodiness in the next films cause he is just a total bummer to be around.

Gandalf. This movie should be renamed "Gandalf Saves the Day Over and Over Again". His voice seemed weaker and scratchier but it has been like 10 years since the first films and the actor was no young sprout when those movies were done. It was certainty enjoyable seeing him be so kickass and they kept true to the book. He pretty much does have to save them over and over again in the book too, so I'm glad they did not change that.

Frodo. I CRIED. When they show him before he gets the ring and goes on his journey and goes through all that crap, back when he's young and happy and the whole world is just happy and pleasant and wonderful and he BELONGS in the Shire because it's home, before everything get's muddled up and home ISN'T home anymore. ;_; WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME

Bilbo. Not sure about him yet. I was pretty surprised at how much he got pushed into the background during the middle of the movie, although it was understandable since they had to set up the whole thing with Sauron coming back and he's not a part of that. That was one of my big dislikes of the movie. With so many characters I felt the character development really got shafted. The only dwarves we get to know is Thorim (mainly his complaining and -_- ness), Fili and Kili a bit and the older dwarf, and with such big name characters like Elrond, Sarumon, Gandalf and Galadriel waltzing about it they get rather overshadowed. Then again it is the first movie and looking back the Fellowship was the weakest of the three films.

Riddles in the Dark. Holy. Fuck. Best. Part. In. The. Entire. Movie. I love Gollum. I think he's one of the most intriguing characters ever created. He's so damn creepy and unstable but I find myself always wanting more screen time of him. I loved how they portrayed him in this film, how he constantly transitioned between O.O to >.< while interacting with Bilbo. He was definitely the highlight of the film for me. I've watched that part over and over again.

I also watched Death Note: Change the World but I'll likely give that it's own post. Because it's L and he deserves it.
