I must be in a writing mood, eh? Two entries, one day, haven't done that in a long time.
Anyway, I forgot to mention in my last entry the pain I feel in my right shoulder. Yesterday, at a Litz/Eisenmann family function, I tossed around the football and played some hoops with Jill and family and had a good time. I have been cautious about my shoulder since the spring of 1999 when I endured an injury playing intramural floor hockey with my biochemistry nerd friends. Team Ouchterlony (named after an agar based immunodiffusion technique and its inventor) lost many games in league play. The uncoordinated, non-jock types do not fare well in such contests, however, we had heart and played for pure enjoyment. Anyway, this one time at band camp, we were pitted against ROTC, unfit for the challenge, and lost. We deemed ourselves unfit for many games. During this game, I sustained a shoulder injury while sacrificing life and limb to get the ball out of our goal area. I dove with my stick, connected with the ball and sent it into their zone, well past center floor. I landed with my arm extended, absorbing most of the impact in my armpit, rendering me useless for the rest of the game. I really should have let the ball go because we ended up losing about 15-2 if I recall correctly. My arm did not function properly for about the next two weeks and I did not seek medical attention because I avoid doctors at all cost. Not even when I suspected a mononucleosis inflammation (symptom: chronic chest sickness for about two months) did I visit the campus hackery for examination.
Now, I pay the price. My shoulder throbs with pain, each pulsation making me wish I could hit rewind or find Doc Brown and set the DeLorean for spring 1999, generate 1.21 gigawatts, and hit 88 mph. Great Scott!
Usually, after such vigorous activity, my shoulder beats and bleeds and feels fine in a day or two. I sense that I pinched a nerve in that area. My shoulder rotates a little awkwardly and I wonder whether or not I broke something that day and if the would be break rehealed in the wrong place, fusing ball into socket.
If I ever see a physician, I'll have it x-rayed. For now, I will play through the pain.
