The Fate of the World Hangs in the Balance! The Election is tomorrow. It is very exciting! Will we all be forced to grovel under the boot of the Bush Gang's impudent, UN-disrespecting might? Will there be Civil War in the US? Will they finally reconsider the Electoral College? ... Sometimes it sucks that I don't have TV.

(Like, I wish I could watch Enterprise, like, at all)

So, how about that Homo floresiensis (I refuse to call them hobbits)? It think it's great. All of a sudden there is a remote possibility that there is another species of human running around somewhere. A species that has language (according to the local stories) and that can use boats (according to the fact that no intermediate-sized skeletons have been found on the island). Suddenly we went from having our closest relatives (the subspecies neanderthalis) extinct 30 KYA (thousand years ago) and the last other Homo (erectus) extinct 100 KYA, to having a brother species extinct 12 KYA, or maybe not at all! It is so exciting.

I know that some people are questioning what it is to be human because of this. My thought is that anything with the genus Homo is human. There are other genera in the homonid family (hominidae) but only the Homines are human. That means that Homo erectus was human and Homo habilis and the others, too. I never really thought about it, but having this other species so close to us in time really focused my thoughts about it. I think maybe I'm feeling racial guilt for the fact that our ancestors (and current brethren) were the cause of so many extinctions, including (possibly/probably) those of other human species, and that guilt encourages me to want to believe that maybe we still have generic siblings out there somewhere. Of course, they say that if Homo floresiensis did die out 12 KYA they were killed by a volcano (along with the native pygmy elephants ... pygmy elephants! so cute!), not by invasive Homines sapientes. Yay, less guilt.

Ok. I sense this entry is getting long. I just wanted to write againm since I haven't in so long.

Thanks for reading this, if you got this far.

Bye (for now)
