This was my weekend to explore Barnet Marine Park, and the approaches thereto (from the West).
Saturday I took the proposed Urban Trail from Bayview to the Harry Jerome Sports Centre. It connects with the northern end of the Burnaby Mountain Urban Trail. The Barnet Urban Trail is not yet paved anywhere, but it is a bikeable gravel trail for two of its thirds. The unprepared section is the middle third, but it is cleared well-enough to be obvious. My favourite discoveries were 1) a cache of old bottles (like sixty to eighty years old), some unbroken, and 2) the old platform overlooking Kask Camp Creek, next to the Kask Bros. Concrete Plant. The proposed mixed-use trail down to and then along the beach is supposed to start to the west of the creek, but it wasn't obvious from the top.
Today, since I wasn't able to actually get to the Marine Park on foot, I biked to it along the highway. It is a beautiful park. I give it a big thumbs up. My favourite part was the ruins of the old mill. Its so cool that we have old ruins in our backyard. I loved the foundation of the old scrap burner. From the point you can see all the way up and down the Inlet, from Port Moody to Vancouver port. Once in the park I was able to travel along the beach back west to find the connection with the Urban Trail. Once you get to the big wall at the west end of the beach, you can cross the tracks and crash through the bush to the grassy slope belong the concrete plant.
Anyway... it was great. I will definitely go back some day.
