Though much of the our continent is still experiencing the chill of late winter, spring has arrived in San Diego. So my brother and I went to Balboa Park on March 1st to see and photograph what was blooming.
Chasmanthe aethiopica
As with the majority of plants in Balboa Park's Cactus and Succulent Garden, this brilliant purple iceplant was not labeled. The Yucca in the background reminds me of something Dr. Seuss would have drawn.
I like the contrasting blue and red in the inflorescence of this bromeliad.
Tabebuia impetiginosa is popularly grown in South America for its profuse pink flowers.
This little cactus was the earliest of many cacti to flower in the Cactus and Succulent Garden.
Another colorful and interesting bromeliad.
This azalea was blooming in the big lath house at the San Diego Botanical Museum.
