Writing Has Happened and BBC's The Musketeers is sort of awesome

Apparently complaining about writing helped, because now I've got two fics written for two new fandoms. Or the second one would be ready if they would just get to the fucking already, the chatty bastards. It was going to be really simple and straightforward, too, but they seem to like teasing each other way too much. Also one day I will write something Important with a Plot. But that is not this day.

I seem to be way into BBC's The Musketeers. It's quite silly and anachronistic but also a lot of fun, and to be fair, seriousness is not something I look for in a Musketeers adaptation. Most importantly, the characters work and you really get a feeling that these are the Inseparables. Aramis is lovely, Porthos is better than I ever could have hoped for, d'Artagnan is the right mixture of annoying and boyishly charming, and Athos... is kind of a jerk, actually, in a way that makes total sense (alcoholic, fail!murdered his wife), but also somehow disturbingly likable. I really disliked him at first, but at this point what they've done with this character makes sense. Somehow it's becoming very hard not to feel sympathy for him. Also all the banter is exactly in the spirit of the book.

I may have finally found a Musketeers adaptation that I actually like, and I've been searching for one since I was 11. This book was like my first real love, my first fandom before I even knew what a fandom was. I remember trying to explain it to everyone and being met with blank stares...

Let's wrap it up with a pic spam which should convince everyone of the show's aesthetic values, at the least.

Aramis, my current favourite in the book and possibly in the show. I'm not yet sure whether they'll keep the clerical background - I sure hope they do, because that was one of the best things about him! He seems to be an excellent shot, hopelessly reckless and just as charming as he should be.

I love this Porthos to bits, I've always liked it when adaptations go for a sort of piraty look for him. Plus his backstory (son of a freed slave) is a nice nod to Alexandre Dumas's family background. Of course, some idiots have complained - apparently France used to be all-white until the 20th century or something, never mind that the book's author was mixed-race... Sigh. Anyway, I was extremely positively surprised by the character and the casting choice.

And then we have Athos about whom I've had mixed feelings. First it felt just off, because neither the actor nor the way the character was written matched the image I had in my head, but he's really started to grow on me. It's not just wtf writing, it's actually a legitimate interpretation of the character albeit different from my own, and I'm really interested to see where they'll go with it. And also I've started to think he's sort of cute. A lot. Ahem.

D'Artagnan is quite all right as well. I like the actor and I like the glimpses of charm and cunning we get, but there's a lot of room for character development here. This far he's been a bit in the shadow of our dynamic threesome. But I do like him, which is more than I can say for ANY d'Artagnan before this...

I need to finish watching the first season instead of writing badly informed fic.
