Bloggers and blog commentors have been reveling of late in the news that Paris Hilton is in jail, is suddenly out of jail, is now back in jail, etc. The latest batch of glee revolves around pictures of an obviously distraught Paris in tears in the back of a police car. Most of the comments I've been reading include either/or/and the words 'bitch' and 'whore' while delighting in the fact that she's going to spend time behind bars and now, moreso, that she's completely bent over the situation.

She's a human being, and she's in pain. She has never directly impacted the lives of anyone whose comments on the situation I've read. She's been convicted of a crime and will, per the law, pay her debt to society. How is this not enough for people? How is it that people can delight in this? Why are people cheering over the fact that this woman is terrified and weeping? What's the matter with society that this is acceptable behaviour?
