I like to admire a pretty figure as much as the next person, but fantasy art has a tendancy to take that idea overboard, especially in the case of women warriors. When a girl is facing up against people trying to shoot and/or stick pointy things in her, you'd think she might want to wear something to cover her vital organs. (Unless, of course, doing so would inhibit her
awesome powers and magic missiles.)
So if you're interested in a breath of fresh air, you should read the excellent post entitled
Fantasy Armor and Lady Bits written by Ryan of Mad Art Lab, who is an actual armourer. Or, if you just want to look at some fabulous artwork depicting fierce ladies wearing armour that's actually suitable to the things they're doing, you could always browse through
Women Fighters In Reasonable Armor.
I'm both giddy that these sites exist and sad that my reaction is giddiness. Because if suiting women up in a reasonable manner was the default, the way most male characters are treated, this wouldn't be notable. But at least we've got a start, right?
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you find yourself spending hours on the Women Fighters artwork. Because man, some of that stuff's awesome.
