We're getting into the holiday season, and I'm sure a number of you are pondering what to buy for that difficult person on your list. Or maybe you're looking to add something unique and awesome to a gift you've already purchased. Or perhaps you're gathering ideas for the
which of course you have already signed up for (and if you haven't, just click on the banner thing).
Book friends, I am here to help. Or to hinder. One of those, depending on your budget and how much of your holiday shopping remains.
Awesome bookmarks are always a good place to start, so you might want to take a look at something that will make your book look like
it's on fire,
bleeding, or
crushing the Wicked Witch of the West. For the romantic, there are
Jane Austen bookmarks, or if you're looking for a bit of a splurge this
golden snitch is a treasure.
Nearly every geek appreciates a good action figure, but if you're not into comic book heroes, they can be tricky to find. Fortunately,
Archie McPhee has a good collection for literary geeks, including
Oscar Wilde,
Charles Dickens,
Jane Austen, or my personal favourite, the
librarian with amazing shushing action. (Sorry, they don't ship outside of the US. I know, it annoys me, too.)
Oh, we're looking for something a little more off the beaten path? Well, try checking out the etsy shop of
Rich Neely Designs, where you can get your favourite hardcover book as your ipod or iphone docking bay.
For the book geek with bare walls, there are always
Spineless Classics, gorgeous posters with the full text of your favourite book, silhouetted with an image that suits the book. They've got everything from
The Hound of the Baskervilles to
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (yes, of course they have the original Pride and Prejudice as well). They even have various versions of the Bible available.
I have actually been lusting after one of these for ages: the
BookBook is a cover for your macbook made from a hardcover book. It looks like a book when it's closed, provides protection for your laptop when you haul it around, and is basically just awesome.
If your Doctor Who geek could use a new notebook, they will glom all over something to contain all their
spoilers.
Jewelery is always hard to shop for when you're buying for another person. It's such a personal thing, and tastes differ so widely.
Zinnia Pea has some really beautiful pieces, all literary-themed, or you could take a look at
Tuxessories, for more gorgeous geekery. (Seriously, take a look at the
Looking Glass and the
Cheshire Cat!)
What does a geek smell like? Well, I'm not sure, actually. But a geek should smell like
In The Library perfume, designed by someone who treasures the scent of a good book and the stories a book's smell can tell.
That's my list of geekery and paraphernalia. Anyone else have anything to add? More book geekiness is never, ever a bad thing.
