The End of Cursive

Jul 07, 2011 23:42

In yet another sign of the times, the school officials of Indiana have decided handwriting is a thing of the past and will no longer be taught to kids in school. The focus instead will be on typing.

Individual schools are being allowed to make their own decision as to whether or not they'll teach handwriting or drop it, but it's no longer a requirement.

As you might expect, people are making a big deal out of this announcement. I have to ask, though, how many of us actually use handwriting? I use a pen to jot stuff down all the time, but I don't use cursive any more than my four-year-old, so I wonder if any thoughts that kids should be learning handwriting comes from nostalgia more than practicality. Thoughts?
