The Gift of E-books

Nov 19, 2010 18:28

Got a friend who enjoys digital books? Amazon has just announced you are now able to gift kindle e-books, something that until now has been a common complaint. Of course, the press release says "anyone with an e-mail address" but that's a bit misleading, since the geographical restrictions still apply as they normally would, but the ability to give e-books at all is a step in the right direction. And while it might seem the most convenient way to read a kindle book, you don't actually have to own a Kindle reader, as Amazon has a number of apps out for a variety of digital devices, as well as a free app available for your PC.

While I don't see myself using the "gift an e-book feature" much, since most of my friends and family strongly prefer paper (and let's face it, for something like a Christmas gift it's kind of nice to be able to wrap a physical object), I hope this sort of thing is popular enough it catches on among other e-book sellers. The ability to gift e-books has been too long in coming.
