janicu would like to draw everyone's attention to
The Pencil Foundation, where they host a school supply program. Community businesses donate their unneeded and gently used equipment for teachers from Nashville Metro Public School to use, and it's basically a win for everyone.
Unfortunately, this school suffered
serious water damage in the recent floods and lost over 2000 books. What The Pencil Foundation is asking for is people willing to donate books, time, plastic storage bins, or shelving. I'm going to assume the majority of you are more able to donate books than any of the alternatives, so I'm ganking the description of the types of books they want:
Children’s books: board books, pre-school books, flap books, activity (coloring, sticker) books, picture books, young readers, beginning readers, children’s and young adult chapter books, and high school materials. Their most pressing needs are for books struggling readers at the elementary and middle school level can enjoy. High interest non-fiction books are as welcome as fiction. Many students are reading below grade level or are English Language Learners. Books in Spanish would also be greatly welcome. New or used books are great. As Ulli said, “A book can have many lives and last many years.”
And, of course, the mailing address to send books is:
LP PENCIL Box at McCann ALC
