Mom had surgery for her hernia today and it's all over. But NOT before there was a final chapter of tears, nerves and trouble. Here's how it went.
She had been at the hospital since tuesday and was scheduled for surgery this morning at 11 AM. We were told that it would take about one hour for the surgery to finish and then mom would be at the recovery ward until she had regained consciousness. We would receive a call as soon as she was back in her own ward.
At 2:30 in the afternoon... we still weren't called.
So dad decides to call the hospital to ask. They just told him that mom wasn't back at the regular ward. Nothing else. Not how she was. Not in what state she was. Just that she wasn't back yet.
So we waited for the call to arrive.
5:30 PM.... we still weren't called.
By this time, I was beginning to get REALLY worried. But since dad was also worried sick, I didn't want to nag or complain because it would only upset him more. So I retreated back into my room upstairs and cried. I tried to distract myself by watching a movie, but I guess Hannibal Lecter's evil is not the right choice for this situation...
Then dad just thought "FUCK IT!" and called AGAIN. And guess what? Mom had been at her normal ward for about three hours. Turns out that during the change from morning to evening shift, the nurses forgot to pass the message of making that phonecall, so the evening shift nurses did not know that we were expecting a phonecall. The nurse that was on the other line with dad apologized profusely, though and she allowed him to talk with mom. Then we hopped on our bicycles and made the 40 minute uphill trip to the hospital.
Mom was very awake and aware, chipper and above all relieved as hell. She said that her back hasn't felt that painless in months. She told us that she will probably come home this friday afternoon.
Holy shit, am I relieved... I nearly cried again at her bedside.
It's finally over....
