Finished watching Free! S1 at 5AM today. I immediately followed it up with S2. No regrets! I wonder what took me so long to pick up this anime, sigh.
Mazu wa: the art was amazing. Everything's very consistent, and the water scenes so beautiful! I can only imagine how long it took to complete each episode! The outdoor shots (ocean, stadium, fireworks, Australia, etc) were also perfect. Furthermore, there's an abundance of muscle and half naked ikemen here, puahaha! I especially like Rin's form:
Although Makoto & Sousuke's aren't that far behind:
I liked the music, too, but not so much the opening songs. I guess I need to listen to them more to appreciate. XD
Yappari, it's IMPOSSIBLE for me not to think about BL while watching this anime. I mean, come on, scenes like Mako fetching Haru from the bath? Haru cooking in his swimwear? Changing room and locker room scenes? (Hello there, Rei no oshiri) Near-death scene that made me chant, "CPR! CPR" to my computer screen? All the innuendo during the end narrations? ALL THE BLUSHING SCENES??? Hell, Haru makes it a point to strip down at the sight of water, for crying out loud! Scenes like these, and more:
we all know they're not really talking about bunk beds
There's no scarcity of scenes that felt fanservice-y, and so it's EXTREMELY easy to form pairings. Personally, I counted 17 in all (RinHaru, RinAi, RinSuke, RinRei, RinMomo, MakoHaru, MakoNagi, MakoRei, MakoSumi, ReiNagi, HaruRei, HaruNagi, HaruSumi, SeraRei, MomoAi, NagiAi, SouAi) IT WAS A TOTAL MIX N' MATCH, hahaha! I totally thought either Nagisa (resident shota) or Haru will have the most pairings (Haru as a mermaidman, can you get any more blatant than that??)
but it turned out it was closet cry-baby Rin who took the cake. Well, he's got both the Iwatobi and Samezuka guys to pair with, after all.
Sure, we watched a whole season of misunderstanding between Haru and Rin, and we actually spent the whole series dealing with swimmers who want to "quit swimming" but nevertheless, I love this anime. At first it looked like just another fujoshi-fodder but I realized it was more than that, especially with the state of mind I have right now. I don't claim to be the best, but I could relate to Haru. Not only because of the reticence (I found it funny how we both don't really keep track of our phones, and how lately I've been thinking more and more about living on my own, eating the same food everyday) but also because I really hope I'd find that something for myself just like how he did.
