The Emily Owens MD series finale - WTF was that?!

Feb 07, 2013 12:48

Okay, I've really got to get this off my chest. My Wordpress site didn't seem like the right place to do it so I'm going to do it here on Livejournal - where my fandoms take center stage and I can talk all I want without feeling guilty.

"Emily Owens, MD" was my favorite new show this season. It starred Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, and Michael Rady in the lead.
Synopsis from TV.com:
Emily Owens, M.D. follows Emily (Mamie Gummer) who is fresh out of med school and is now a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she'll have the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Bandari (Necar Zadegan), and her resident Dr. Micah Barnes (Michael Rady). Emily works along side her med-school crush, Will Collins (Justin Hartley), and her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson (Aja Naomi King). As she navigates through her new life, she finds it may not be so different from the high school years she was so eager to leave behind.

The series started off a bit shaky but what new show doesn't? It found its footing a few episodes later and it was starting to get really good then BAM! Cancellation. GAAAHHHHHHHHH.

I've had more than a month to come to terms with the cancellation. It happens, right? And the remaining episodes were still golden. Episodes 1x11 (Emily and the Teapot) and 1x12 (Emily and the Perfect Storm) set me up for a heartbreaking, funny, happy, BRILLIANT finale and what do I get? An ending that makes me rage just thinking about it even after a full 24 hours after seeing it.

This pic right here? Made me squee in delight.

This one gripped my heart like a vise. A good vise though.

She says she's over Will. Micah Mouse brings her a new office chair and a poster with a view. She stays with Micah and waits for the results of his mom's surgery instead of hobnobbing to increase her chances of winning Bandari's research assistant job. She says that she WANTS TO BE CHOSEN. She says that she didn't know what she'd do if Mouse weren't with her and it felt like they've known each other for a lot longer than 5 months. They have this wonderful heart-to-heart in the records room and AGREE to date. And then she sleeps with WILL!? RAAAAAGGGEEE!!!

While I too would look like this when faced with Justin Hartley's body, DAMMIT I didn't want Emily to see this!

This episode 13 was all about mistakes and how Emily thinks everything through because she doesn't want to be like her flighty mother. Will would have been her mistake to learn from - you finally get what you want but it isn't always what you need. It WOULD have worked and would have been an excellent character and cliffhanger mid-season episode if only it weren't the SERIES FINALE. GAWD. You could tell from the promo for this episode that she opened the door for Will but since Emily was wearing a dress shirt (could have been a man's shirt!), I'd hoped hoped hoped that she opens the door for Will, tells him to get lost and that he'd had his chance, closes the door, then turns back to Micah. BUT NO!

Then series creator Jennie tweets these:

GAH. Couldn't they have reshot the last scene to include some Emily/Micah happiness once they knew that they were cancelled? Or added an extra 5 minutes to show the Emily/Micah reconciliation, or at least a confession and Emily choosing Micah and begging for forgiveness? I'd wanted some closure from this last episode - good feelings so that I could peacefully send this show off into the sunset - not feelings of rage at being left hanging. Part of me feels like I shouldn't have even read the "what could have happened" tweets because all I'm feeling is disappointment and anger at not seeing these scenes come to life.

I'm choosing to remember that Emily Owens MD ended with 12 episodes (not 13) and with this:

Michael Rady needs a new project, stat.

anger, tv, disappointment, cw, emily owens md
