Happy birthday, girls

Aug 24, 2016 21:07

Henry had barely slept last night, weird dreams about the many ways in which the girls' birthday could go wrong, including an aggressive unicorn. And he hadn't even planned anything involving unicorns, not even decorations ( Read more... )

Rebecca felt Henry get up but she was exhausted and rolled over, falling back to sleep instantly.

When her alarm finally went off, she dragged herself out of bed and towards the bathroom. The door was closed and she tapped at it.

"Love? Let me in, I need to shower if I'm going to face today with anything remotely resembling coherence." She said, leaning on the wood.

What if his animal outside would affect his mind? What if he would turn violent?
"No", he croaked, trying to keep his voice as level as possible. "I mean, I'm almost done. Start the tea?" That way he could slip downstairs, to the lab. This had to be fixed before anything worse would happen.

She groaned and hopped from foot to foot. "I need to pee Henry. The shower was a cover. Come on...open up or there'll be a puddle on the floor!" She was pretty much joking but she just didn't want to trek to the kitchen right this second. "Please please please??" She tried.

"Go downstairs , Rebecca. Or-" Saying that she shouldn't look wasn't going to work. "I think I heard Lily. Check on her and I'll be out when you two are back."

Rebecca blinked at the door. He was never that short with her.

"Henry...what's wrong? Are you sick?" She asked, pressing a hand to the door. "We can always cancel if you're sick."

Oh, God. "No, no no! I'm just - inconvenienced. Everything can go on, I'm not needed around. It's just -" His stomach growled. "I don't know if it's not contagious. So I'll get to the lab. Not spread..anything."

She narrowed her eyes at the door.

"Okay well now you're just scaring me. And we've slept together the whole night so if you're sick, so am I." She thumped the door and then realised it opened outwards. Her picks were only in the next room. If he wasn't going to let her in, she'd let herself in.

"Leave me alone, Rebecca!" His growl surprised him, made him feel even worse when he heard worried hiccups from the room next to theirs. "Please, it's nothing I can't fix, I just don't want - I just don't want to hurt you. Any of you."

That barely sounded like him.

"Henry...why would you hurt me?" She asked him quietly. "Please, love." The girls were stirring next door but not fully awake yet. "Talk to me."

"Because I could. Rebecca, if you love what we used to have, you have to listen to me, please. I don't know what happened and I don't know if it's perm- I just want to get to my lab without having to worry about your safety." He led his head fall back against the door. "For us."

She frowned at the door but they hadn't gotten this far together without trust.

"Okay. I'll get the girls up." She said. "We'll see you downstairs." She added because whatever was wrong, she wasn't about to let him get away with hiding all day without showing his face.

"Thank you. Thank you, thank you." If they'd stuck to the kitchen or living room, he would be able to move past them. Maybe this could be fixed by lunch, although he didn't know where to start.

He waited until, he heard them downstairs before opening the door, wrapping a robe around him before jumping down the stairs case. He had to be as quick and as silent as possible.

He must have flown past the kitchen because all Rebecca heard was footsteps. The girls looked through the doorway and made curious noises but she was making breakfast and that was more interesting for the time being.

It took a while but eventually, Rebecca wasn't enough and the girls started to get restless. Eve, always the stroppier of the two, was starting to get upset at not seeing her father all morning, especially when she'd heard his voice while she was waking.

"Okay, okay." Rebecca said, bouncing the girl on her hip while Lily fought with the buckles on her little dungarees, trying to take them off. "Lily, love, clothes are staying on today, you little nudist." Eve took that moment to let out an ear-piercing scream and Rebecca winced and strode to the top of the stairs leading to Henry's lab. "Henry...I could use more hands than I currently have." She called.

"Call Bette!"

Henry had drawn blood and other liquids, tested cells, energies and DNA strings, was in the process of extracting some marrow when she called down to him. It hurt. Both things.

But he could find nothing wrong. Was this all an illusion, because Henry would be able to live with that. If this meant that this was his new body now, he couldn't put that on Rebecca and the girls. He had promised them a nice, an ordinary life. Not to share a house with a monster.

"Or Jean, she was going to come over for a visit anyway!" Maybe Jean could help. With an illusion or break it, if it was one. If it was all in Henry's head. He couldn't stop crying. Why would this be in his head? What had he done to deserve this?

"Are you serious?" She called and next to her Lily managed to finally get the buckle undone and was happily stepping out of her dungarees, her little chubby legs bare and her nappied bum bobbing about as she toddled around the living room. "Lily..." She sighed. "Come here, little monster." She breathed, and scooped up the girl on her other hip.

Henry wasn't about to get away with leaving her with two screaming babies on their birthday. She marched down the stairs and kicked at the door.

"Henry McCoy, you get out here right now and help me with these kids or I swear I'm going to 'cook' everything in the kitchen. Then me and the girls are going to eat pizza and icecream and not a single vegetable." She threatened.

Could she stop pushing him? "This is a bit more important than a bad diet day, Rebecca!" He couldn- he was already turning into the monster in the basement. Maybe he just needed to start drooling. Maybe he already was.

His volume had confused the girls, and he had to come up with a solution. Had to. "S- something happened to me. I'm - I'm mutated. Seriously, completely, gruesomely mutated. That's it. That's it, Rebecca. That's what I need to keep from you. So yes, you will have to find help elsewhere. For as long as this will last."
