A Surprise Visit

Jul 29, 2016 23:19

It was twenty-five days from the twins' first birthday. Slightly coinciding with that was Henry's incredible busyness, making work weeks longer and time off pretty non-existent. Which he was sure Rebecca didn't appreciate, but at least this time around he didn't forgot about intercourse. When the both of them weren't too tired ( Read more... )

Rebecca hadn't expected to hear her actual name shouted through the door. Especially not by an English voice. Especially not by that voice.

She looked at Henry and opened her mouth to say something, but the knocking came again so she got up and went to the door.

"Fucking shut up, Jason. You'll wake the girls and everyone else in the neighbourhood." She hissed as she pulled the door open.

Why was there a person in front of their door yelling Rebecca's name? Why was it a male person?

He couldn't even ask because she was already gone, and he put the girls back in their beds before finding a robe and his glasses. This man better had a very good excuse to bother them, especially on their weekend off.

"Who is this?" Henry put a hand on Rebecca's shoulder. "And why is he here?" In our lives?

"Henry, Jason. Jason, my husband Henry." Rebecca said, waving a hand between them as the tall rangy man grinned his way into the hallway, closing the door behind him. "Jason and I go way back to the old days." She clarified knowing Henry would understand that to mean her mercenary days. She lifted her chin. "And I have no clue why he's here." She raised an eyebrow at Jason and the grin faltered on his face.

Jason ran a hand through his hair nervously. "You could say I was in the neighbourhood?" He tried and then sighed. "Okay I need some help getting in touch with Marcus."

Rebecca nodded. "You need an out." She said and Jason visibly deflated with relief, nodding.

"I swear I'll be gone in a day. Two at the most." He said, looking between her and Henry.

"What?"

Was this man seriously implying that he was going to stay here? In there home? "No." He didn't know this man, only knew there was absolutely no good news involved, and wouldn't allow that near his family. "If Rebecca can have stashes, I'm sure you have some financial safety net you can fall back on as well. Get a hotel room."

"He can have breakfast here", he added to Rebecca. "After that I want him out."

Rebecca could understand why Henry was being the way he was and she couldn't blame him really. Jason was part of her old life and while she wasn't ashamed of it, she knew it upset him.

Still, Jason was a friend.

"Henry..." She started and Jason interrupted her.

"Look, I know it's not ideal. If I had anywhere else to go, I'd go there, but Becs is pretty much the only person I can trust right now." He said, talking directly to Henry. "If I go out there again, I'll be a corpse by the end of the day."

"And that is what you want to bring into my house? Our house? Lethal loyalty?" Henry didn't und- he could see why she did what she did, but he couldn't understand. Ever.

"Rebecca, we have two eleven month year old daughters. Do you want to get them involved in this? And what will the ne-" Neighbors think.

"No, of course I don't, but I'm also not going to send a man to his death because I'm not in the life anymore." Rebecca said calmly. Henry was going to struggle with this. "Henry..." she said, threading her fingers through his. "Wouldn't you want him to do the same for me if I was in this situation?"

"You wouldn't get into that situation, and not just because I would be there to get you out of the one leading to such a one." He fought down a growl, because what kind of nonsense dialogue was this when danger could be approaching right now?

"He can eat, he can leave. Buy him a ticket, a hotel room, I don't care, but I'm not going to have a time bomb on my door step." He freed his hand from hers, because he knew what she was doing. "I'm thinking about our children."

Rebecca cursed under her breath and turned to Jason.

"Jase...were you followed here?" She asked him.

"I went dark as soon as I hit the coast. No mobile. No cards. I got a ride inland from Leah, and Monty got me to you. If you don't trust either of them, I'll leave." He said and Rebecca scowled.

"Monty got out of the business around the same time I did." She said and turned back to Henry. "He could be a weak link now but I doubt it. Can you give me six hours? I can get Marcus on it and then he'll be gone, I swear."

"You seriously want to do this? Here, in our house? Our mortgaged house, our safe home?"
His hands were itching. "Fine. Fine. Your name is on it as well, after all. But I'm getting the girls and taking them somewhere I don't have to worry about it being a crime scene waiting to happen."

Rebecca glared at her husband while she spoke to her friend. "Jason...go into the kitchen. First door on the left. Eat food. Keep your ears shut."

"Yes Becs." Jason murmured and stepped behind her to pass them both.

When he was gone Rebecca lowered her voice dangerously quiet. "I ask for six hours so I can help my friend and you threaten to take our children away?"

Did all of Rebecca's sanity disappear? "How in Go- how can you even think I would do such a thing. You're their mother!" And it was a silent blessing that they seemed to be sleeping through all of this.

"For the day, Rebecca. For your six hours if they won't become more. For the risk of having a fugitive here, and not wanting innocents in potential crossfire. For a short period of time, because you promised me so."

Settling a little Rebecca, nodded. "I get that, but you and the girls aren't going to come to any harm here. You know I wouldn't let that happen."

She could see his point though. She didn't want the girls or him in any danger and Jason...well, she'd been out of the business for a while. It wasn't like she knew exactly what was likely to be coming their way if Jason hadn't been as circumspect as he claimed.

Setting her jaw, she nodded. "I'll make it four hours." Marcus would probably ask for a favour in return at some point, but he'd do it for her anyway. "Come on. I'll get the girls ready with you."

"You don't control the universe, Rebecca. Things can happen outside your control and training." Usually he'd soften such a message with a kiss, but Henry was still angry. This was their safe place and she had invited danger in.

"I'll be back here after four hours. Without the girls, of course." He followed her upstairs. "Not bringing them home until I know it's ours again."

"Okay." She said, picking up the girls ready-bags. The girls themselves were standing up in their cribs now, excited at the idea of going out.

She looked Henry. "I know you're mad at me, but he's a friend that's saved my life more than once. I can't say no, Henry."

"You don't even want to know where I'm taking them? What, in case they will torture it out of you or something similarly morbid?" He just didn't understand how he had gotten into this situation.

"So he risks your life and of three innocents to balance it out. Sounds completely logical, if you would be living in a guerilla society." He picked up Lily and put her down on the dressing table, giving her an Eskimo kiss. "I'm not going to understand your point here, Rebecca. I just hope I can return here with nothing changed."
