It was the first I had truly laughed in a long while, and yet nobody was around to watch.
For years, the tape was always located near a VCR, and it was always in its box. Despite my family’s fandom of several of the people involved and our countless viewings of their other projects, the tape had never been out of its box as far as I knew, let alone in the VCR.
One weekend, when I was home alone, I decided to end the drought.
I was glad I did.
A little-known collection of sketches called “How To Irritate People” is the funniest I had ever seen John Cleese, and to a lesser extent, Graham Chapman and Michael Palin, both of whom appeared in several segments. I had a hard time composing myself during several of the sketches, particularly the garage-a precursor to the famous dead parrot routine-and the game show. Judging by his facial expressions in the latter, so did Cleese.
I watched the tape on a few more occasions with other people, and while I still got a kick out of it with each subsequent viewing, none would top the first time.
Oh, and horses eat lobsters.
