I have never practiced organized religion in my life. Although several times within the last year, I've thought to myself, "Maybe it's time I start," I never have. Even though I needed to go to the Methodist Church in Old Town as part of my volunteer work, I didn't. Even when my school and personal lives fell into a downward spiral last spring, I didn't. When things got really bad, however, I did try praying, which admittedly made no sense, since I had no idea to what I was praying (plus, it didn't help me any).
While I have a copy of the Bible on my bookshelf, I needed one for a class I took four years ago, and since then, I've only used it for crossword clues. Again, I've thought to myself multiple times, "Maybe it's time I read it," but I never got around to it.
For years, I have subscribed to the idea that what you believe is not important, as long as you believe in something. However, I also feel that people should believe what they want, not what others tell them to believe, which is why I am reluctant to join any denomination of Christianity. Perhaps my life would be better if I did practice an organized religion, but I don't know if it's really that important.
