Baran: "Oil spill means we need MORE GOVERNMENT"

Obama: Oil spill a ‘wake-up call’ for climate legislation:
“This disaster should serve as a wake-up call that it is time to move forward on this legislation,” Obama said, citing a need to develop “clean” energy sources.

Wake up? True, but who needs to wake up?

Meth, porn, bribes use by drilling agency staff:
Staff members at a [government] agency that oversees offshore drilling accepted tickets to sports events, lunches and other gifts from oil and gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to an Interior Department report alleging a culture of cronyism between regulators and the industry.

In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work, according to the report by the acting inspector general of the Interior Department.

While Oil Slick Spread, Interior Department Chief of Staff Rafted with Wife on "Work-Focused" Trip in Grand Canyon:
Though his agency was charged with coordinating the federal response to the major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Department of the Interior chief of staff Tom Strickland was in the Grand Canyon with his wife last week participating in activities that included white-water rafting, ABC News has learned...

The Stricklands departed for the Grand Canyon three days after the leaks in the Deepwater Horizon pipeline were discovered. Ultimately, after the government realized that the spill was worse than had been previously thought, officials decided that Strickland was needed in the Gulf so Strickland was taken out of the Grand Canyon by a National Park Service helicopter.

EPA chief cancels DSCC appearance:
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Senate Democrats next week in Manhattan, canceled her appearance Tuesday afternoon, hours after a POLITICO story about the event sparked Republican criticism that it was inappropriate in the midst of the ongoing environmental crisis along the Louisiana coast.

Oil spill prompts delay in offshore safety awards ceremony:
The Gulf of Mexico oil rig accident and spill have prompted the federal Minerals Management Service (MMS) to postpone an awards ceremony scheduled for May 3 that honors oil company offshore safety achievements.
The semi-submersible drilling rig that exploded early last week was owned by Transocean Ltd and was under lease to BP. BP is a finalist for one of the awards, according to the MMS website.

Obama's 'blame others' approach:
White House propaganda aside, the administration cannot escape some blame for the oil spill because the federal government has an extremely extensive oversight role in the drilling industry. Last year, the Obama administration bestowed a safety award on the very BP drilling platform that is leaking in the Gulf. The rig was moved and started drilling in its current location in January. The Minerals Management Service, which is part of the Interior Department, inspected the rig monthly and claims it inspected the drilling platform just 10 days before the accident. The rig's emergency shutoff valve purportedly had a dead battery, which safety inspections failed to discover. So much for the efficacy of federal regulations.
So yeah, according to Baran we need more of this FAILURE to achieve SUCCESS!
